  • Now Open: Duchess of Flanders

By OWEN MORRIS The Duchess of Flanders opened yesterday on the corner of 39th Street and Genessee in the space once, a long time ago, occupied by the Nutty Girl. The Duchess in this case is Vivianne Berghman, a native of Belgium who moved to the States eleven years ago and brought some of her home cooking with her. "In Belgium we call it a traiteur, it means to treat people," Berghman says of her concept. "It started out with butchers in Belgium who would cut up meat and they started to make ste

  • Boulevard tasting tonight

Boulevard started its Smokestack Series in late 2007, right on the cusp of a great two years for Kansas City beer geeks. We've seen two beer festivals, Boulevard has introduced one year-long beer in addition to the seven Smokestack beers, and two bars with more than 100 drafts each -- beer heavens -- have opened. One of those is the Foundry. The other is Flying Saucer in the Power & Light District, and tonight, it hosts a Boulevard Brewery Smokestack Series tasting hosted by brewmaster Steve

  • Pauwels brings the beer and a few surprises

Last night I was fortunate enough to attend Flying Saucer's tasting of Boulevard's Smokestack Series beer. It was presented by Boulevard's brewmaster Steven Pauwels, who not only talked for 90 minutes straight but also kept the crowd of 40-plus enthralled. Tough to do when they're slowly getting drunk.Pauwels, who came to Kansas City from Belgium for the Boulevard job, began by remembering that when he first arrived for the job interview nine years ago, he didn't know anything about the city: "I

  • Boulevard Tank 7 and wheat wine: first impressions

Earlier today, I wrote that Boulevard brewmaster Steven Pauwels introduced two soon-to-be Boulevard offerings at Flying Saucer last night. Here's what some of us thought of the offerings. The second beer we tasted is currently nicknamed Tank 7. When it's released it will have a different name ("It takes much longer to think of the name than to think of the beer," Pauwels said only half-jokingly), but the recipe should be the same. It's based on the Saison-Brett with some notable differences. When

  • Boulevard makes beers official

Flickr: HerkieIf brewmaster Steven Pauwels' words weren't enough, Boulevard Brewery's director of marketing Jeremy Ragonese has confirmed with Beer News the release of the brewery's witbier Two Jokers along with the other two seasonals discussed on Fat City last week. The current Boulevard seasonal Irish Ale (which just tied for best Irish ale above yes, Murphy's, according to a taste test by the Des Moines Register) was paired with the last Smokestack release, Imperial Stout. • Irish Fest puts on a stout brewing contest this year

For the first time, the country's third-largest Irish Festival  -- the KC Irish Fest at Crown Center -- will be holding a stout beer brewing contest. The contest is open to amateur brewers only and will be judged by Boulevard's master brewer Steven Pauwels, among others.Any type of stout is allowed, whether it be dry, sweet, oatmeal, imperial, American or any other variety covered under the stout guidelines provided by the Beer Judging Competition Program. The brewer must turn in three bott

  • All the news that's fit to drink

The good news for the world of beer drinkers is that new brews are always popping up on store shelves. The bad news is they might not be an improvement over what you're currently drinking. Anheuser-Busch recently rolled out two new additions to the family with Budweiser Select 55 and Bud Light Golden Wheat. Budweiser Select 55 was the only one of three potential 55-calorie brews test marketed this summer that was actually released. The reviews are all across the board (it was universally pann

  • Tastings around the metro

Over the next few weeks, there are plenty of opportunities to dip your toe into a bit of booze.  It's short notice, but worth re-arranging your schedule for a scotch tasting tonight at Anthony's Restaurant & Lounge. The Balvenie and Glenfiddich tasting begins at 6 p.m. and costs $30 to sample five different malts.  If you can't make it to Anthony's, consider stopping by JP Wine Bar for its Friday night tasting between 6 and 8 p.m. It's free for wine club members and $10 for the

  • Belgium without beer: a world I don't want to imagine

Collaborations like the one between Belgian brewer Jean-Marie Rock and Boulevard's Steven Pauwels may prove more important in light of recent news from Belgium about a possible looming beer shortage amid protests over job cuts and declining beer sales. The past two weeks have seen angry picketers stacking crates and blocking incoming ingredients and outgoing crates at the headquarters of Anheuser-Busch InBev in Leuven, Belgium. Reuters reports that the brewery blockades are expected to end to

  • Boulevard set to release Rye-on-Rye

Make some room in the fridge: Boulevard's newest smokestack entry, Rye-on-Rye, hits the shelves next week. This is a limited release, which means Boulevard's only producing 10,000 bottles. It's been aged in oak whiskey barrels from micro distiller Templeton Rye for nearly a year.  "We were excited to get these casks, though initially we weren't quite sure what to do with them," said Steven Pauwels, Boulevard brewmaster, in the release announcing that Rye-on-Rye was coming to stores. "Our
