  • Daily Briefs: Giving boring old news a "manscaping"

Aruba, Jamaica oooh I wanna take you/To Bermuda, Bahama come on pretty mama/Key largo, Montego, baby why dont we go: A Jamaican gunman took a planeload of passengers hostage at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, just the mention of which set off a Beach Boys "Kokomo" neural bomb in my head. It's not even the whole song, just the fucking chorus repeating over and over again, which makes me want to take whole airplanes of people hostage. The one good thing you can say about "Kokomo"

  • Download Awesome New Republic's Rational Geographic Vol. II

Awesome New Republic are having a big few weeks. They just recorded an episode of The Hills last week, and their new EP, Rational Geographic Vol. II is available as a free download starting today at their site. You'll have to surrender your name and e-mail address, but that's pretty much par for the course these days They are beloved by Stereogum, which is unsurprising, given their sound. Awesome New Republic have a pastiche of influences that fall somewhere between the Beach Boys and Of Montre

  • MP3: White Denim, "Mirrored and Reverse"

I saw White Denim the night before SXSW started at a bar called Ms. Bea's. All they served was cheap beer, and the stage was out back on a sort of porch thing. The KJHK folks I'd gone down with and myself hadn't even checked into our hotel yet, and we were already rocking out to this band, who almost defy description. myspace.com/whitedenimmusic White Denim is one of those bands that requires name-checking something like half a dozen other bands to describe, and even then, something gets

  • Portugal. The Man: Who Are They?

There's an excellent interview with Portugal. The Man up over at Wired's Underwire blog. The band hails from Alaska, and it seems that growing up in a town like Wasilla means that your pop is far removed from the pop currently rocking the airwaves. I've listened to their new album, The Satanic Satanist, and it's a confusing listen. There are elements of classic harmony-laden pop like the Beach Boys, but there are elements of prog, indie, and the whole thing is one of those rare albums th

  • New releases, Tuesday, October 6

While it's not a musical release, I'd really like to mention the fact that the long-delayed Trick 'r Treat is finally seeing DVD release this week. Currently pulling in a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it's a return to anthology horror like Twilight Zone: the Movie or Creepshow. I've seen nothing more than the trailer and a couple of clips, but I'm going to be buying this today, in hopes that the studios will stop churning out remakes and crap like the Saw series in favor of quality genre
