  • Concert Review: Rise Against, Friday, November 21, at the Uptown Theater

Rise Against, with Thrice, Alkaline Trio, and the Gaslight Anthem November 14, 2008 Uptown Theater Better than: Getting all dressed up for some hipster party. By CRYSTAL K. WIEBE Thank the masses that Barack Obama won the presidential race. If he hadn’t, the Uptown Theater might have been a scarier place to be last Friday night, with disgruntled punk fans exorcising their political frustrations on the crowd. As it was, I still almost got hit in the face twice with a shoe while proletariat p

  • Concert Review: Jack's Mannequin, Eagles of Death Metal, Anberlin and Gaslight Anthem. Wednesday, December 10, at the Midland.

Anberlin brought the hair, Eagles of Death Metal brought the guitar, Jack's Mannequin brought the vocals, Airborne Toxic Event brought the set that was too early in the evening for me to see, and the Gaslight Anthem -- they brought the songs. Jack's Mannequin. Photos by Scott Spychalski I spent about 50 bucks at the Midland Theatre last night at 96.5 FM's the Buzz Ganked Christmas Show, but I feel like a rich man because now, right now, friends, I am listening to sweet marbled-aquamarine slab

  • Upcoming: Fake Problems at the Jackpot, July 17

Fake Problems will hit the road this summer in support of their debut SideOneDummy release, It's Great To Be Alive. The band has been on the road since they wrapped the recording and this tour will be their first set of headlining shows in support of the album. They will be joined on two separate legs by Kiss Kiss and Ninja Gun. Fake Problems recently made an appearance on Fuel TV's Daily Habit (one song of which is below) and did an amazing live session on Daytrotter.com and in similar fashi

  • Wayward Weekender: Stay Tuned at Davey's, Fiesta Kansas City, Antennas Up and Ha Ha Tonka

With Spring has come renewal on the Kansas City music scene. I started out this past Friday with a hearty, bolstering meal at Stroud's, followed by a quick drink at Jazz on 39th (where the full moon had its best company of the evening, I swear), and then on to Davey's Uptown Ramblers Club for the first installment of the Midwest Music Foundation's Stay Tuned series. I missed the earlier acts, Mr. Marco's V7 and the Afterparty, arriving as new-band-of-old-scenesters Hipshot Killer was bashing o

  • The Gaslight Anthem Post Video For "The '59 Sound"

The Gaslight Anthem's The '59 Sound is one of my favorite records to come out this year. I fought and fought and fought against buying into them, but once I had my come to Jesus moment regarding their punk meets Bruce Springsteen sound, I was a much happier man. Seriously, just watch the damned video. You'll watch, you'll start to sing along, you'll understand.

  • See Oklahoma rockers Red City Radio at the Mustache Club this Saturday

Red City Radio has real mustaches. And a guy who looks like David Cross. It's official. I can't keep track of all the ironic, figurative and literal upper-lip hair in this city. There's the Kansas City Fake Mustache Club, a bunch of people who go to local rock shows and make podcasts with faux hair affixed to their faces. It's great that this group supports local music, but I confess I remain confused about the point and unamused by the 'staches. There's also Club Mustache -- a rock house around

  • Rock of Pages: Upcoming Books From Rockers

Mint Records chanteuse Carolyn Mark just put the finishing touches on her new full-length, Let's Just Stay Here. It's out on October 13, along with her second cookbook, The Terrible Hostess: Recipes For Disaster, Vol. II. Mark had the following to say about her first cookbook, according to Exclaim!: "All the recipes are road tested by me," Mark insists. "There's about 20 recipes in there, plus drinks like the Cabin Cosmopolitan and Bourbon Decay." Yum, right? I can't wait to get my hands on this

  • Download SideOneDummy's Free Sampler

The most conversational press release I've ever read (with grammatical and spelling errors intact): So all of us at SideOneDummy where sitting around talking about the last year of releases that we have had, and how fun and crazy it has been. Then we started talking about how many cool releases we have in the pipeline, which made us realize it was about time to put out a free digital sampler that chronicles the last year of SideOne's releases, and the one's we have coming. So, for the ne
