  • Overheard at the movies: Godfather edition

Like the Super Bowl or a good fetish ball, nothing brings people like a theatrical screening of The Godfather Part II. Mixed among the film geeks bundled snugly into Westport's Tivoli Cinemas for Thursday night's final showing of a restored Godfather II print were moms, dads, teens, business people and art-school types. And gangstas.Watching Francis Ford Coppola's engrossing epic at the back of a nearly full auditorium, I noted some lightweight wannabe mobsters behind me. They were highly appr

  • Daily Briefs: ¡Viva la Revolucion! Would you like a pillowy cushion for your butt, hippie?

Friday, the Tivoli will start running both parts of Steven Soderberg's biographical Che as one four-and-a-half-hour-long presentation, without all the extras like "previews," or "ending credits," but with a ten-minute intermission which presumably occurs EXACTLY IN THE MIDDLE of Che Guevera's life, even if he's in the middle of a sentence or something, or else it's not an "authentic" intermission. It is totally going to be the Ocean's 11 of interminable Che Guevera biopics. I think Don Cheadle

  • Fictional right-hander aspires to pitch in KC

The feature film Sugar -- opening Friday at the Tivoli -- depicts a baseball player who aspires to pitch for the Kansas City Knights, a fictional big-league team whose logo and colors resemble those of the Royals. The movie begins with 19-year-old Miguel "Sugar" Santos pitching at a baseball academy near his home in San Pedro de Macoris. This is true to life. The Royals operate an academy -- where baseball-talented teens refine their skills, live in dorm rooms and learn how to say "I got it!" in

  • Sweet Jesus! Cowtown Ballroom documentary events tonight and tomorrow

Because we ran a Night & Day blurb focusing on tonight's event, and Ink, I am told, ran a blurb focusing on tomorrow's party, I figured it'd be a good idea to set up a one-stop shop for all your Cowtown Ballroom...Sweet Jesus! needs. First of all, what is it? Well, it's a documentary, made by local filmmakers Joe Heyen (producer, director) and Tony Ladesich (director of photography, writer, editor) about the 1971-74 heyday of the Cowtown Ballroom, the (classic) rock venue that operated out of w

If you don't have plans tonight, check out the free screening of Food, Inc. at the Tivoli Cinemas. The film has been getting rave reviews but so far has reached a limited audience, grossing just under $2 million since opening last month on the coasts.Chipotle hopes to change that with this screening, which it's also sponsoring in 31 other cities. Chipotle founder Steve Ells has been promoting the movie in his stores and in interviews, saying he hopes all his customers see it.The screening starts

Copyright Criminals, a film that takes on the tough topic of sampling, and where it fits in both the legal and artistic realms, comes to the Tivoli on October 22, at 7 p.m. Director Kembrew McLeod will be on hand at the screening. (Thanks to DLC for the tip.) It's something that has many facets, such as Biz Markie's use of of a Gilbert O'Sullivan sample or the Verve's notorious tussle with the Rolling Stones over "Bittersweet Symphony." Interestingly, it seems that the film focuses main
