  • Concert Review: Republic Tigers and Ultimate Fakebook, Jayrock 4 at the Uptown

Scott Spychalski "I'm so freakin' excited, I can hardly play!" Click here for slide show. Balding, bespectacled Bill McShane did manage to play -- very well, actually -- last night at the Uptown as he rejoined his old mates, bassist Nick Colby and drummer Eric Melin, to reunite their band, Ultimate Fakebook for a set, which, Melin promised before the show, would save the universe. And it seemed like it may have, at least for some super-enthusiastic fans at the show.

Eric Melin and J.D. Warnock, the men (and erstwhile musicians; see: Ultimate Fakebook, the Dead Girls) behind locally based movie Web site Scene-Stealers.com are mad taking over SXSW this weekend, hosting three separate parties on Sunday, March 15. If you're down in Austin for the Interacitve portion (March 13-17) of the mammoth music, film and everything-that-is-cool festival, follow your meat sniffer to the Stealers' "Bacon-Flavored Interactive After Party," featuring, who else? Bacon Shoe. Th

  • Tonight: "Summer Breeze" Yacht Rock Tribute at the Record Bar

Between the years 2005 and 2008, the masterful, low-budget viral video series Yacht Rock, made by a bunch of 20-something dudes out in California, had music geeks glued to their Channel 101 bookmark hoping for a new episode like farmers praying for rain for their thirsty crops. Beginning with episode 1 -- in which the collaboration between Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald that birthed "What a Fool Believes" is parodized and the term "yacht rock" is defined by host "Hollywood" Steve Huey as the

  • Concert Review: the Creature Comforts reunion at the Record Bar

Saturday night's Creature Comforts reunion show at the Record Bar was one of those nights where I hung out, drank too much, and generally acted like I was ten years younger than I am. And, really--the Creature Comforts were a major part of my early twenties. Confession time: while I've probably seen more Ultimate Fakebook shows that I have Creature Comforts shows, the Creature Comforts were always my favorite. As much as I enjoyed the UFB reunion show, this was the one to which I was really loo

  • Throwback MP3 of the Week: Ruskabank, "How I Spent My Summer Vacation"

This week's Throwback MP3 is actually a two-fer of Manhattan bands. Not only do you get the Little Apple's ska-rockers Ruskabank, you get them doing a cover of Truck Stop Love's classic "How I Spent My Summer Vacation." The track was recorded for an aborted TSL tribute comp that never got off the ground. Bits and pieces of it float around in the ether. Lawrence's Disagreements did a version of "Stagnation," and Ultimate Fakebook's version of "Nothing Left to Start" made it onto their split with

  • Every Halloween Show Your Little Heart Desires

In what we hope is the master list for your Halloween shenanigans, there's a lot to get through. For one thing, since the holiday falls on a Saturday, some folks are getting it started a little early Friday night. For instance, Fourth of July is at the Eighth Street Taproom (801 New Hampshire in Lawrence) Friday night with Sultan Sea. As you can see from the flier (by Pre Sense Form and Zaguar Collages, featuring the sexy Brendan Hangauer from last year's Halloween), costumes are not onl

  • Video: Ultimate Fakebook, "Little Apple Girl" (live in Chicago)

If you weren't fortunate enough to have the money to attend the Motion City Soundtrack shows in Chicago this past weekend, you unfortunately missed three nights of the band playing their albums in their entirety. You also missed three nights of Ultimate Fakebook, as Justin Pierre and the band hand-picked UFB as their openers (opening for UFB was MCS' first-ever show). Of course, if you were smart enough to follow UFB's drummer on Twitter (@SceneStealrEric), you could've watched the shows as the

  • Throwback MP3 of the Week: Lushbox, "Thin Walls"

Once a week, Wayward Blog brings to you sounds of the area's musical past. When the Touchdowns' "Drunk and Loaded" was the Throwback MP3 at the end of September, I said that I'd met the Touchdowns after the Klammies in 1999. I also happened to offhandedly mention that I'd met them at Lushbox's house. What I failed to mention was that in 1999, Lushbox was named "Best New Band" by the Pitch's readers. Nick SpacekLushbox at the Granada, June 1999This is important, because I had literally n

  • R.I.P. Alex Chilton

Alex Chilton, singer for the Box Tops and Big Star, record producer, and all-around amazing musician, died in New Orleans today. From "The Letter" to "September Gurls" to his guitar work the Memphis rockabilly group Tav Falco's Panther Burns, I've loved everything the man's ever done. He was so influential, the Replacements wrote a song about him. There are so many bands from this area that owe Chilton a debt, that his loss will hit hard. Ultimate Fakebook, the Creature Comforts, the De
