  • Cure for jet-lag coming soon

It's odd that jet-lag needs a cure. It does not seem like the sort of thing for which there should be a cure. When it's been a long time since you've traveled it can become easy to see jet lag as a psychological weakness, not a physical one. All you've got to do is tell yourself to "buck up, you've done nothing but sit for ten hours." But as all weary travelers know, jet-lag is as real as any virus or condition. The problem all has to do with natural sleep cycles and circadian rhythms. As doctor

  • Gatorade: a cure for what ails ya

Flickr: DJ Linda LovelyGatorade has been promoting its new G line of low-calorie drinks with a team of athletes -- the Super Bowl ad featured 16 different stars. But athletes aren't Gatorade's real target audience. It's hungover people! Our sister blog The Snitch in San Francisco did some research among store clerks and estimates that 50 percent of all Gatorade sales are for hangovers; the percentage goes up on weekends. For most out-of-shape people, it's the only reason they have to drink Gatora

  • It's time to close food loopholes

Even though I spend a good portion of my day writing, reading and talking about food, I'm still as confused as anyone at the grocery store. For every health claim that proves to be false -- vitamin flavored soda better for you than regular soda! -- another claim comes along to replace it.Having worked in bakeries, I've always been wary of grocery store wheat bread. I know what real wheat bread looks and tastes like, and not much supermarket wheat bread actually fits that description. My suspicio

  • Foraging for food: a more in-depth look

Last week in Breakfast Buffet I linked to a Forbes article on foraging for spring-time food. It was written in the first-person about a trip to the Catskill Mountains and contained mentions of cattails and mushrooms galore but no actual pictures. This line had me worried: "one cap of the well-named Destroying Angel mushroom, abundant in the spring, can kill you." What the hell did this Destroying Angel look like, so I know how to avoid it?It looks like pretty much every other mushroom. (It's pic

  • Fortified with nonsense

The blog Consumerist has recently been poking some holes in the idea that Naked Juice is as natural and healthy as it claims to be. One astute reader noticed that the nutrition label for Strawberry Kick showed that it contained zero vitamin C, even though it supposedly contained 14 whole strawberries, a fruit packed with vitamin C. The company responded that the vitamin C is lost during pasteurization, but added that another Naked Juice flavor, Power-C Machine, has "added boosts" of vitamin C. "

  • Defeat a hangover with Pepto ice cream?

Hangover cures never appear to be designed with the average person's tastebuds in mind. And that's probably your first thought when you hear about the latest hangover cure: Pepto-Bismol ice cream. Blogjam sought to combine two reliable hangover consumables in one meal. The ice cream seems to help with sweats, while the dairy and eggs provide Vitamin B12 -- vitamin deficiency is one of the suggested causes of hangovers.  In the ice cream recipe, vanilla and sugar were used to cut the flav
