  • Taco restaurant loves Ernest Borgnine

A story in today's New York Times explains why Tortilla Flats, a Mexican restaurant in the West Village neighborhood, celebrates its 17th annual Ernest Borgnine Night next week. The festivities include an Ernest Borgnine Look-Alike Contest open to both men and women. Since there couldn't be a better time for local restaurants to lure customers into their dining rooms with festive promotions, why doesn't some clever restaurateur host a night devoted to one of the many celebrities who ha

  • KCUR airs audio documentary of Walt Bodine, classic audio archives now online

Walt BodineOctogenarian radio icon Walt Bodine's historical broadcasts are now online. Bodine donated a handful of historical tapes to the Marr Sound Archives, including Bodine's coverage of the 1951 Kansas City flood, the 1957 Ruskin Heights tornado and the 1968 riots. The tapes also feature interviews with Robert F. Kennedy. Real Audio isn't working for me -- just like TV Barn, who I got to give a hat tip to -- so I can't listen to the shows. But I'll be listening to today's edition of the the

The new Power & Light District dress code began yesterday, and all patrons will now be be required to wear those little black shorts Henry Rollins used to wear when he fronted Black Flag. Button-down dress shirts must be TUCKED IN to little black Henry Rollins shorts. The only permissible hats are the race-neutral Darth Vader helmets which truly bring us together as one people, you guys, regardless of ethnicity, gender or unexplainable lack of fondness for famous records everyone says are

  • Daily Briefs: Longer and less frequent than the name implies

The news anchors have all been talking in very scary voices lately. They all sound like Jigsaw, and you're handcuffed to a sink in a grimy concrete bathroom and if you want to survive, you're going to have to do something horrible, like naked-hug Larry King or some damn thing. As an antidote to the swine flu scare, all I can offer you is the serenity that comes from not talking about it. After the jump, a news roundup of items that bear no relation to stories about flu, or to each other. Click

  • One of the Ethics Professors is -- shockingly -- not boring at all!

Clancy Martin is a professor of philosophy at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. He's also one-half of the Ethics Professors, a regular feature on Walt Bodine's morning radio show. And according to an interesting piece in this week's Newsweek, the prof just published a novel stuffed with true-crime called How to Sell, the meat of which is somewhat autobiographical.

Tune in at 10 a.m. to the Walt Bodine show on KCUR 89.3 to catch the food critics, including Fat City's Charles Ferruzza, who will be holding court with Walt and answering your questions. The topic of today's show is hot dogs and sausages, so be preparing your questions. Make sure they're good -- I've heard some hot dog questions that are the wurst! Sorry, couldn't resist. I just relish puns.(Image via Flickr: Chad Davis)

  • Kansas City's top ten cinnamon rolls

Jaime Warren It's almost criminal not to love cinnamon rolls, especially great cinnamon rolls. There are certain qualifications that set the perfect rolls apart from the plastic-wrapped supermarket variety: not too dry; moist, but not gummy; lightly brushed with a sugary glaze -- too much icing can turn a breakfast roll into a cupcake. KCUR-FM's Walt Bodine loves cinnamon rolls (he particularly misses the ones at the long-defunct Putsch's Cafeteria) and every so often devotes an entir

  • The latest Pitch and 21 things we learned this week

U.S. soldiers are committing suicide in record numbers, and the Army is struggling to fix the problem. This week's Pitch feature story, "Exit Strategy," looks at one solider who almost became a statistic. Also, Martin covers MoDOT's shoddy maintenance of inner-city bridges. Ferruzza reviews Café Trio. And Buckle Bunny talks tour managing. 1. Lynn Jenkins' "hope" for change is white. 2. Living next to a Rockhurst frat sucks. 3. Riverfront Heritage Trail is pretty cool. 4. 26 homicides in KCK.

  • That was then, this is now

The Victor Hugo Inn -- where cocktail drinkers were "Les Miserables"I have yet to meet someone in Kansas City -- including veteran newscaster and restaurant fan Walt Bodine! -- who can remember dining at the Victor Hugo Inn, which once stood, in a long-razed stone mansion, at the northwest corner of 85th and Wornall Road. I think I know why Walt missed the restaurant: it was famous for its fried chicken. And chicken -- in any way, shape or form -- is the one di

  • Battle of the Dishes: Macaroni and Cheese

Mac-and-cheese: The real McCoy'sMacaroni and cheese falls into so many categories: soul food, comfort food, kids' food, stoner savory, classic side dish, buffet staple, super-inexpensive meal (the cheap boxed version with the neon-orange powdered "cheese") and easy-to-digest fare for senior citizens. It's also a good dish for what ails you: When you're not feeling well -- fighting the symptoms of cold, flu, hangover -- a soothing dish of soft noodles and creamy cheese sauce has curat
