  • Tech N9ne Headlining Cali Hip-Hop Festival

If ever a show name perfectly matched a musician, it's the Paid Dues Festival and Tech N9NE. The San Bernardino, Calif., hip hop concert just announced KC's most well-known rapper as a headliner. The festival, which starts in March 2009, has been described as a Warped Tour for underground Hip Hop. Previous festivals and tours have featured artists like Kool Keith and De La Soul. This year, the Midwest acts will dominate, judging by the roster. About damn time. Even though Tech's always go

  • Hey, bands: Last call to apply for local Warped Tour slot (plus tips on making an EPK)

We've just been informed that there's still time to apply to play the "Kia Kevin Says Stage" at the Vans Warped Tour Kansas City stop (Bonner Springs, actually) on August 4, 2009. But the deadline is tomorrow, April 1. Eek! Register and apply right here at Sonicbids, the musician booking and networking site that is delivering band submissions to the Warped Tour. To enter, you'll need to assemble an EPK, or electronic press kit, which includes photos, band resume, MP3s, videos -- all that stuff.

  • They're Partying At Denny's Now?

In a move that fills me with confusion and suspicion, Denny's is trying to make their restaurant chain "cool" by creating a pseudo-subculture called Denny's Allnighter. They've got band like Rascal Flatts, Sum 41, and the Gym Class Heroes creating items for a special "Rockstar Menu." I swear to God--I can only wish that I was making this up, because it seems like something that was conceived by the Onion. Anyhow, ridiculous or not, the restaurant chain will be "hosting the official Warped Tour

  • Free Sampler Downloads From Epitaph and Fearless

We're all about hooking you up with free tunes this week, huh? Once summer hits, all the record labels want you pumping their jams through the car stereo, the front porch, and the beach, so they offer up a slew of sampler downloads. For the most part, these sampler comps take the place of the CDs you used to grab off the counter of your local record store. They're cheaper for the labels, better for the environment, and and you the listener can just delete what you don't like. Take heed that mos

  • Worst Song Ever?

Back and forth across MySpace and Facebook this week has been this "is this the worst thing ever?" series of links and vids between Eric Melin of Scene-Stealers and Aaron Weber of Transbuddha. I present to you the three worst offenders. You judge as to which is the most horrible thing ever created. Is it Brokencyde's auto-tuned crunk-core anthem "Freaxxx"? Or do we go one step further with the screamo-meets-electronica of Confide, and their frighteningly awful Postal Service cover? There's

  • Incoming: Angelo Moore at the Record Bar

Bassist Zach Phillips has been on the Warped Tour with his band, the Architects, all summer. Angelo Moore, aka Dr. Madd Vibe, aka the frontman for Fishbone, has been the MC for the Skullcandy stage where the Architects play every day. After seeing Moore do a set of ska and reggae stuff with HR of Bad Brains in D.C., Phillips thought, "Shit, I could do that!" and got to booking a show. If you're not headed out to Capitol Federal Park at Sandstone for the Warped Tour, be it because of musical tastes, dislike of festivals, or the fact that it's storming like fucking crazy, you can still have a private little festival at your computer. If you head over to this page, you can find a link there that will get you a free Warped Tour sampler from iTunes. • Concert Review: the Vans Warped Tour 2009

What with the weather and everything yesterday morning, I wasn't too sure as to whether or not Warped Tour 2009 would be worth attending. The idea of standing in the middle of an amphitheater parking lot all day during a torrential downpour isn't exactly my idea of a perfect summer day. Nick SpacekGallowsHowever, by the time I hit Tonganoxie on my way out from Lawrence, the sun had begun to peek out and was shining full force by the time I'd made it through the gate and in front of the H

  • Civilian Review: Vans Warped Tour 2009

Editor's Note: In response to a challenge that arose out of the comments section of my Black Francis review, stout and hearty music fan That Guy (known to his friends as Bryan Hobby), took to the hills and dales of Sandstone to review the Vans Warped Tour from his own perspective. I commend his bravery and determination. Someone get That Guy a beer. -- Jason Harper BY THAT GUY I was an angry young man living in Salt Lake City when I attended my first Warped Tour in 1995. • Video: the Architects, "Bastards At the Gate"

I know we've been all kinds of video-heavy today, but there's just so much goddamn great stuff today. Think of it as the best MTV substitute ever. Just in time to get the kids revved up for the last week of Warped Tour dates comes the video for the Architects' "Bastards At the Gate." It's fresh off their Skeleton Crew release The Hard Way -- which is, seriously, their best album yet. I say that about every album the boys put out, but this is the same way. They just keep rocking out bigger and b

Now that your sunburn has peeled and healed and you've reconciled with your mom for allowing her bastard boyfriend Roy to wear one of your many but equally beloved Underoath T-shirts after he spilled beer on his polo while you were at Sandstone, the Vans Warped Tour is returning, in movie form, to Kansas City. This Thursday, September 17, on one night only, a documentary about the tour's 15th Anniversary celebration will be showing at select theaters nationwide. The movie culls interviews an

  • And the Warped winners are...

Our Warped Tour 15th Anniversary movie ticket giveaway contest is over. Congrats to Caity and Mitchell, who answered the trivia answer correctly (New Jack City, fool) and whose names were picked out of an upturned ski cap out on the mean street known as Main St., downtown KCMO. Those who wish to buy tickets for tomorrow night's 7 p.m. showing of the rock doc may do so online or, presumably, at the box office of any participating theater. Thanks for playing, hustlers.
