Manchester-born, East-London raised writer Iain Ellis, an English professor at KU for the past eight years, has just published a book you might be interested in. Out this past December 1, Rebels Wit Attitude: Subversive Rock Humorists, is a study of the funny side of rock rebels such as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bob Dylan, the Velvet Underground, Warren Zevon, Randy Newman, Alice Cooper, Talking Heads, Ice T, Madonna, Weird Al, Nirvana and Beck, to name just a few of the people on the 350 pa

  • Brand new video from Weird Al

Weird Al Yankovic has just put up the video for his new song, "Craigslist." You'd know that if you followed his Twitter feed. It's not a straight song parody. Rather, it's one of his "style parodies," where the song is original, but sounds like a kind of style -- i.e., "Your Horoscope For Today" didn't parody any specific ska song, but it certainly sounded an awful lot like Reel Big Fish, Save Ferris, et al (it also happened to feature the Reel Big Fish horn section). Much like that song, "Cra

  • 26 (non-consecutive) Days of Glossy Nostalgia: C is for ...

As regular readers are painfully aware, I'm trying to get rid of eight medium-sized cardboard boxes containing thousands of promotional photos from the past. And until someone comes and takes them off my motherscratchin' hands for free, I'm going to post selections from the archive from A to Z as often as I can (which, considering I'm only on "C" is not very often). I don't know how someone could hear that and then look at a picture like this one of the Comedian Harmonists, and not come rushing

  • New releases, Tuesday, August 25

I once read an article in Rolling Stone where they called Collective Soul this generation's 38 Special. Rabbit is the name of their new album. "Weird Al" Yankovic's Internet Leaks EP hits iTunes today. Yes, it's a digital-only release previewing the next "Weird Al" full-length, which will hopefully see release sometime next year. The five-song EP has "Whatever You Like," which is the most spot-on TI parody ever, as well as "Craigslist" and "Ringtone." You can grab that sucker right here.

  • Weird Al Podcasts, Widgets, and More

Accordian-wielding parodist "Weirdl Al" Yankovic released the two-disc The Essential "Weird Al" Yankovic last month. If you own all of Yankovic's albums, then there's nothing new for you here. However, if you want all the hits, this is the best way to get them. As part of the promotion for the album's release, Legacy Recordings has produced a four-part podcast: Comedians Tom Lennon and R Ben Garant joined Al's road crew to make some cash after Comedy Central canceled their TV show, "Reno

  • Weird Al Names the Top 9 Underrated Funny Songs

Cracked got "Weird Al" Yankvoic to do them a list (yet another in their seemingly endless series of lists), in which he names "The 9 Most Underrated Funny Songs." He is rewarded by having his last name misspelled "Yankovich" every time it appears. cracked.com That being said, it's an intriguing list -- while it contains Dr. Demento staples like Napoleon XIV and Barnes & Barnes, the songs chosen are tunes even I've never heard of, and I thought I had every novelty comp on the face of the
