Someone Must Love Springfield

Posted by Jason Harper on Mon, Dec 4, 2006 at 4:31 PM

The idea of Pitchforkmedia.com giving more attention to a band out of Springfield, MO, than, well, anyone else, would have been inconceivable if it hadn't already happened.

You,

Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin.

Audio-visuals fuckin' A after the jump.

You're probably wondering how the hell the Pitch missed them. The main reason is we drink a lot. Additionally, SSLYBY hasn't played here in ages. We were all busy with the Republic Tigers 'n' shit, man, lay off! But we know about them now and are enjoying them.

You can stream their latest album here, provided you can navigate through a page that's mostly in Dutch. Aside from seeing them on as credible an indie label as Polyvinyl, it's pretty crazy to see a Springfield band on a Dutch music Web site. One day, the world will fit inside a clog, I tell you.

On to the music -- it's hard not to like Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. Even big scary Vladimir Putin might wiggle to a song like "Oregon Girl." It's got a slackery '90s vibe but with enough smooth, mellow hooks and harmonies to equip the sound for our age of irony. It's solid but hazy. And at heart, it's just good guitar pop.

What next, Springfield?
