The Supernauts. Saturday, February 10, at Davey's
Someone will probably want to slap me for saying this, but I'm pretty sure the Supernauts do Led Zeppelin better than Led Zeppelin could do Led Zeppelin. Jordan LeBrecht, the skinny, singing Supernaut, can also inspire goosebumps when he croons like John Lennon or Paul McCartney. LeBrecht did a lot of that a few weeks ago, when his local retro rock trio played a covers-heavy set at Jerry's Bait Shop in Lee's Summit. Last Friday at Davey's Uptown Ramblers Club, however, the Supernauts stuck mainly to their own songs, which sound exactly like the era the band apparently time traveled here from in tight, vintage pants.
Mainly because guitarist Tim Braun's in the Kansas City Repertory Theater's production of "Love, Janis," the 'Nauts didn't get started until well after 1 a.m., following a neverending set by the Gaslights. The country-fied Gaslights made me glad I pulled on cowgirl boots for the show, but I wasn't there to two-step. A surprising amount of other people stayed out late for the Supernauts, too, including a few who may have actually lived through the the good old classic rock daze.
That generation does not include Blackpool Lights singer Jim Suptic, who I learned prefers Pabst Blue Ribbon to Old Style and who's going to be a father for the first time this summer. He dispensed local real estate advice to me and my BF, while we all waited for the Supernauts' time warp to begin.
Ultimately, the show included lots of rockin' Beatles-esque tunes, a guest appearance by a Janis Joplin impersonator and enough swagger to make me glad I was going home with a man. I hear the Supernauts' manager also handled Incubus, right up to the time Brandon Boyd started invading the dreams of teenage girls all over America. I hope that manager knows how to get in touch with Wolfmother's people.
