Things We Learned this Weekend

1. There aren't many people for whom a liter bottle of Maker's is not a more than adequate token of gratitude. (JH)

2. Don't Date Him Girl: useful resource or haven for slander? (CW)

3. The Jell-O shots at Sidekicks are surprisingly lethal. (JC)

Heathcliff would not approve of Sidekicks' use of Jell-O.

4. Pat Nice, a respected local (but sometimes Chicago-based) house DJ and producer, has waited on me before at Fric & Frac. (JH)

5. Via Metafilter, a clip from the edgy Lawrence Welk show. Is this making fun of your parents? Or your grandparents? Aging hipsters lurch awkwardly around the dance floor as Welk's big band blasts out this full-throated Velvet Underground tune. Cunningly made, it's either an ironic subversion of the Velvet Underground, or an ironic subversion of Lawrence Welk. I just don't know anymore. I can't help thinking that there should be a return of sincerity in both rock music and the kind of alt-geriatrica that used to emanate from Welk's soap bubble-festooned set:
