The Wayward Son is actually wayward this week. It's not clear where Jason Harper is right now, but we're told it has something to do with west Texas and Penthouse magazine. So this week, expect some fill-ins in this space.
Today, here's a review by Pitch freelancer Richard Gintowt of The Killers show:
It doesn't take a major-label A&R pedigree to understand why The Killers are huge. When it comes to '80s nostalgia and pseudo-Springsteen stadium rock, Brandon Flowers & company are spot on. And although I've always enjoyed the songs I've heard on the radio, I've never quite felt moved by the band like Jama Crady.
Jama is a 31-year-old Lawrence expatriate who recently moved to Los Angeles. One day she was driving when "When We Were Young" came on the radio. Being homesick at the time, she totally broke down at the song's post-coital moment of reflection: "Sometimes you close your eyes and see the place where you used to live when you were young." As Jama puts it: "I was bawling ... It was my MySpace song for like nine months." She could have caught The Killers at the Staples Center for $180, but she elected to fly home instead and catch them at the River Market for $30 (also the current price of a Killers t-shirt). Jama would also like to assert that -- although prone to bouts of Killers-induced crying -- she is not some "900-pound girl in the corner eating doughnuts."
Things learned from the Killers show:
1. Black tuxedo vests (as sported by Flowers and Hot Hot Heat singer Steve Bays) are this summer's hottest fashion, but it's totally ok to wear ripped jeans and Widespread Panic shirts to a Killers show.
2. The Killers live show sounds exactly like their records, and that's pretty damn impressive given the amount of synths and falsetto vocals.
3. Strobe lights are best used sparingly, rather than full fucking blast for 90 minutes.
4. The best way to endear one's band to the audience is still to constantly remind them how cool they are.
5. "Mr. Brightside" is still the most popular Killers song.
I got no beef with the Killers. They're fun and fairly intelligent, and those are two things that should always be welcomed in today's post-grunge landfill of top 40 wrist slitters. But I will say that the Life and Times show I caught later at the Grand Emporium had me mesmerized in a way that reminded me of when I was young. And I'm guessing the few dozen people nodding their heads beside me felt exactly the same way.
