The nominees are in. The voting is open. The 2007 Pitch Music Awards are on a collision course with your ass.
Hell yes.
A panel of more than 30 local music experts -- people whose lives are invested in the Kansas City and Lawrence music scenes in one way or another -- have chosen the nominees in categories that we feel best represent what's going on in the sonic landscape here.
The voting begins now, and the process culminates with the year's best local music pub crawl, Friday, August 3, with the Pitch Music Showcase in Westport. That's followed by the Awards Ceremony, where the winners are crowned as copious drinks are consumed and hijinks are perpetrated at the Uptown Theater on Friday, August 10.

what the hell happend in your issue about the sonic guys you had Ahmad Alaadeen as a nominee for best jazz. What gives
can't say i know or even heard of those other yahoo's. no disrespect
hey kjhk dj,
you know that the Republic Tigers are not the same as the Golden Republic, right? this is the first time we've been nominated. what would you predict our next new song will sound like? and, what do you do, that we can't do? i bet you can make love to a man better than we can.
p.s. it's Roman Numerals; no "The".
p.p.s. i bet you're ugly..... what do ugly people like?
(shhhh, hey everybody else, i was just kidding about the ugly thing; and i really like gay people too. he's just mad because somebody broke his wheely-board ramp. shhhh.)
SB,
why would you care what the pitch or kansas city thought of you??? & how do you have 80% orignal music?
I just saw the lists and I must say, I'm kinda shocked. I was shocked last year when my band, Brothers Green, was nominated. We played the showcase and had a great night. We didn't win but we also didn't lose...so I thought. I've been busting my ass in this town for almost 10yrs and have gotten to the point where I realize that a magazine like the Pitch has a great affect on who this market's fans go to see. So when I don't know who is in the pool of experts and can't invite/intice them to come see us, I don't feel like we sought the right listener. I'm not like some folks who shy away from shameless promotion. I think we are one of the, if not the, most unique acts in this city. It seems like there is a flood of fanfare for bands/artists who thrive on recreating others music, and that media types push folks to go see them. We play at least 80% original music and are not genre specific. I might just be crying, but I don't think the names in the category we were in last year have changed by more than ours not being there, and damnit, I want to be there. If I didn't want us to be there, I would feel like I just have a hobby. I just find it so eerie that the same folks come up every year, yet when I scour the schedules in the Pitch to go see them, to learn from them, to learn why they were seen as better than us, I haven't seen their name in a year (The last time they were nominated for K.C.'s best of). Maybe we suck... Also, I know a particular person might read this, I ain't directed at you in any way...you helped more than anyone else. I should just wipe my tears and go back to the studio and work harder. I guess I just wanted to vent my minor/unexpected disappointment. Because I was eagerly waiting to see if we had been nominated again.
I'm wondering why Mac Lethal has not been nominated for live performance. Because he raps? He puts on one of the best live shows around and is more consistent than many of the local alt/rock/indie/hipster fluff bands. His performances are funny, intelligent and the man works his ass off for the crowd. Just wondering.
baby birds? why do they pop up in the pitch every month.. pretty sad.

I don't think Rex Hobart and the Misery Boys are a band anymore, are they?
I know that the people that were chosen were from what was sent in on the ballots. But if this is to be fair why not just have better selections. Maybe change up the pitch(no pun)a little and make a rule, if you have not won in 2 years make room for some body else that is working hard to get out, and performing most of the time. Some of the people that made the list havent done anything in a long time, but for some reason they are on the ballot.
Maybe there should be special criterias such as: how many times you have perform(in the year) through out the KC area, how do the fans feel about your music, and what are your turn outs like?
This way a lot of groups that are just name popular wont make the list.
i was wounding why the outlaw junkies were not in the country awards they have to be the best country band in missouri and kansas so why not show them some love there sound is the best there songs are the best and there live shows are the best check them out at outlawjunkies.com
Aside from much touring Roman Numerals' members also operate the city's busiest rock bar.
Congrats to all the bands who got nominated....You all work very hard!!!
Just Curious, do you guys ever list who the 30 music experts are that sent in nominations? or maybe list who were sent nomination ballots? That way maybe people will sit back and take this a little more seriously....
Roman Numerals have been working our asses off to represent KC over the last year. Two West Coast tours. An East Coast in two weeks and a song in a movie called Captivity. We thank you for the nomination. See you at the shows- Billy
PS Hi Annie in STL! See you in July.
PPS Hi DJ KJHK. We love you, man. You need a hug? If we aren't too busy getting undeserved pats on the back, I'll be here for you. Truly.
obviously not enough people are hearing the music magicians. we would have this rap act locked up. www.myspace.com/musicmagicianp...
Hey, anonymous KJHK DJ, I sent nomination ballots to your station via e-mail several times. I sent them to multiple e-mail addresses (which I can't refer to now because the contact info page for the station comes up blank on my computer, both on Explorer and Firefox). I asked the e-mail recipients to pass them around to the staff and DJs, giving the people at your station ample opportunity to participate in nominating local bands for this year's PMAs. I didn't get a single ballot back from KJHK.
So thanks for taking the time to complain about this year's ballot. It would have been nice had you and your colleagues found the time to vote first.
'Oblivious' is a bit harsh a term for Pitch's music coverage. But there is a 'groundhog day'-type feeling when reading this list. Who is stagnant- the musicians or the media?

Maybe I've never paid very much attention to the Pitch Music Awards, but why are 90% of the nominees the same bands that are nominated every year? I guess it mirrors the Pitch's limited coverage of the same local bands over and over--always boring, regurgitated music like The Architects, The Roman Numerals, and The Republic Tigers. Thank god there are more intersesting things happening in Lawrence and Kansas City even if the Pitch remains oblivious.
Nooms in '08! Vote the Nooms!
perhaps Jason will get more of a kick out of my response to that last.fm thread...
jeez there are some rough decisions there. i think that rock category is the one that will haunt me until awards are handed out. did i pick the right band? ugh...
and also props to you guys for not making a vote in every category manditory. i dont know and dont care about rap much so a vote from me would just be whoever sounds the most familiar by name alone.
and jason, i thought you might get a kick out of this:
