Josephine Isn't Bitter. No Way.

Posted by Jason Harper on Wed, Aug 8, 2007 at 3:28 PM

Crystal K. Wiebe reports:

Clearly, Josephine Collective, the band of Johnson County boys who are signed to Warner Bros., weren’t pleased to learn that another local band beat them in a contest to play the coveted Homegrown stage at KRBZ 96.5 FM the Buzz’s upcoming Beach Ball 3 concert at City Market.

I couldn’t find any vote tallies listed at the Buzz’s Web site, but, according to a sarcastic MySpace bulletin Josephine posted today at 2:18 p.m., unsigned power poppers Life In Jersey (who do actually live here, not New Jersey) got some 18,000 votes in the online contest, while Josephine racked up a measly 1,000. Life In Jersey also beat out local acts Five Star Crush, Republic Tigers and Making Movies.

Josephine seems to think the contest was a sham. And, yes, 18,000 is a suspiciously large amount of votes for any local, online contest. Regardless, it’s still way cooler to see an unsigned KC band – rather than some guys who are already on a major label – get the chance to open for a bunch of big-deal acts like the Used and Shiny Toy Guns. Josephine gets to open for the Used multiple times next month, anyway – when the two bands go out on tour together.

That’s not consolation enough for Josephine, though. Exactly 40 minutes after announcing the contest results, someone from the Josephine camp posted another rambling bulletin, bitching about Kansas City’s unsupportive scene and even hinting that the band wants to leave. Well, good riddance, then, crybabies.

In case you’re not friends with Josephine on MySpace, both bulletins are pasted below/after the jump/past this picture of JoCo.

Josephine_thumb.jpg

Bulletin number one:

Subject: Friends!@ Romans! COuntrymen!!

Body: lend me your ears. i lost mine. wanna know when i lost them. when i just heard this news...

Josephine Collective will not be opening the Buzz Beach Ball show with The Used. we regret to inform you that this means we will NOT be playing with the Used AT ALL in our home town of Kansas City seeing as our september tour with them skips KC. we're really sorry folks. try coming out to STL!@@

also, go give a big congratz to Life in Jersey, the band that did win, and not only won, but by 17,000 votes!!! whoa!!

yeah really.. we had 1,000 votes and they had 18,000. we got our asses kicked. i mean they don't even have 18,000 friends on myspace.... we don't even have 18,000 friends on myspace. they must just have a HUGE fanbase around here...

well anyway thanks for participating in the shaft! thatnks for the sham. see ya all next Friday

Bulletin number two:

Subject: p.s.

Body: bitter tastes only taste as sweet when it's night time and no one shows up./

our scene sucks (KANSASCITY). we have no venues. no one helps each other out. it's all a battle. where's the appreciation? where's the attendance? where's th ingenuity?

where's the beef?!

and also. it's time to leave for a long time. it's been So amazing being a kansas city band for this long but the problem with hanging around too long is people start to take you for granted. i think we're going to stop playing so many shows around here and focus on getting our name out and around. most bands think things like this but have NO BALLLSSSSS and would never say it. i will. a lot. we're gonna do this thing.

(anyone who supports us...thank you. you're the reason i love playing shows. you are not however the reason i make music. i make it for me. because creating something, bringing an expression such as a song into the world and watching the ripple it makes..it's unreal. i love music more than myself. my existence is gray without it.)

===

your life is boring and so are you. sitting on your computer downloading fgree music and making fun. laughin at the kids who are out there doing it. you're gonna be workin at the fuckin quik-e-mart while they're in Cabo livin it up under a margarita umbrella.

the world is HUGE. there is so much out there. so much fun to be had. if you're not having it then i don't feel sorry for you.

===

remember when me and you and my band used to be best friends? remember when we used to hang out at shows and you didn't believe the hype? you just knew that we were good kids who were down with what you were down with. yeah??

well i haven't changed. you have,. you started listening to all your friends. you got a big head and started thinking, "I can do that better than they can. why are they benefiting? i mean they aren't that good."

we're a bad ass band whjo isn't afraid to say so/ we're a nice group of guyas who's down to chill with anyone. we're lovers. YOU ARE THE HATER.

so if you're over yourself yet here's some advice. SMILE!!! big as fuck and cheesy too. look all those assholes in the eyes and say, 'hey dorfus cunt sticker. you've got no gall. you're a big ball or rolling sliudfge with no spine and no aspirations and no heart and no soul and no passion. you're a lump and a bump and a draw on society and the talented people around you so go get buggered you four eyed fuck."

which side are you on? art is exploding!

GO LISTEN TO THE ROLLING STONES!!! stop listening to this bullshit music that has no heart! what are you doing?!?!?!?! you're wasting it!!

pleased to meet you! hope you guessed my name.

honestly their music isn't that good (josephine)...not that much talent going on there, just some kids attempting to play the same stuff that other similar bands are playing. Where's the originality?

This is fucken ridiculous. Ok. I've only know of JoCo for a little over a day now, but whoever posted the bulletins had a right. 18,000 votes? That's a little much. They made good points. And anyone who's a fan will back them up 100%, I'm sure.

ANYWAY!
Instead of posting fucken blogs to try to get people pissed off at them or something, go do someothing better. How about you go try to do what they're doing? I bet you wouldn't make it five fucken minutes. They had a right to be pissed off.

p.s. I LOVE DILLON TEAGUE DEVOE and if you don't like him you can go die!!!

not anyone from the architects, i swear.
nice try, though. fortunately for you, they actually know what they're talking about, as they've been signed to, what, 4 labels now? you might pay heed to listen to them, although I'm sure Mr. Goldfinger has got you high off the fumes of the smoke he's blowing up your ass.

personally, i wish you success, and i'm not bitter about people being successful at all. i'm successful at what i do; it just isn't being the frontman of a Say Anything cover band. i just take great offense to someone getting signed based off of gigs in overland park, and slagging on the KC scene that they've been a footnote of for all of two years. do you know how many people have worked over the years to get to where we actually are, to where we have decent clubs, a great local scene, and draw awesome national bands? i doubt half the people posting in this thread do. i know pulling out the age card is lame, but seriously...people have broken their backs to make this town more than just a place to stop between st. louis and denver, between dallas and chicago. we're not NY or LA, nor do we even begin to pretend to be. move there if you can't deal with it, or seriously start your own place or start booking shows. the myspace generation love to bitch about what they don't have, but aren't willing to do anything to change that.

oh, and you've always said "fuck authority", eh? well, get out of "overland park", then. it's the safest, whitest, most authoritarian place in the world. you're a hypocrite if you're spouting off hot topic slogans and living in the middle of mallville USA, brah.

people . . . listen up, and then go on with your life. stop caring about this stupid stuff.

as for josephine, why would any one of their members care that they lost in a voting contest? rigged or not, they still would've lost with "legit" votes. they have 17,000 plus myspace fans, yet only pulled 1,000 votes??? that's weak, that's lame. i'm "friends" with both of the bands on myspace. i didn't get a bulletin or anything from josephine about a contest. yet i got a msg from life in jersey informing me of the contest and requesting a vote. i was handed a flyer from life in jersey at a show. i saw flyers posted in stores and coffee houses and posters outside of shows. i saw life in jersey banners posted on myspace, etc. clearly they promoted, got the word out, and out worked josephine.

a teenager from josephine is gonna whine and bitch about that!?!? haha of course! no one should care that these guys got handed a deal without much effort. BUT, when that unappreciative band takes it all for granted, talks trash and cries over this stuff? take a lesson from story of the year, who worked with the same feldman who got them signed on to warner. those guys are appreciative and know the unworthy opportunity given to them. at shows they say how blessed they are and thank everyone that supports them. they play shows in st louis and have local st louis bands play with them!

josephine fails to realize they got slapped in the face by 96.5 the buzz. they put a band that is signed to a major label in a local band voting contest?

if you're in a band that gets "handed" a great opportunity on a major label and you don't get an opening slot in your hometown and you want to whine about it about how your hometown scene sucks and voting is rigged and blah blah blah, then whine to your booking agent who failed to get you the show. whine to the hosting radio station that didn't put you on the show. and at the very least, whine to your momma for not raising you right!

Life in Jersey sucks ass. They aren't even from Jersey anyways, and they'll never get there cause their music is shit.

Josephine Collective has an amazing stage presence that blows all other bands out of the water. They're touring with The Used.
They played five gigs at Warped Tour.

Life in Jersey...?
Didn't think so.

One gig with Buzz Bash won't do shit for them. They still suck, and they always will.

i do believe that there was some sort of error within the voting process. i'm not quite sure about cheating... although, it is quite suspicious. life in jersey did work really hard to spread the word. i saw a lot of flyers/people holding up posters after the snow patrol show at the uptown. my sister said she saw them outside of the modest mouse show.

i dont think that this life in jersey win was intentional. i honestly think something messed up within the scripting of the website. i know a little about web scripting and i have to admit, the voting page was put together pretty strange.

in my opinion, josephine is an amazing band. yet so is life in jersey. im pleased anyway. they're both cool.

so basically, i dont think it was rigged or cheated, i believe there was an error in the scripting. what i have come to find out, the voting page was a html voting script. look all over the internet and see that html voting scripts aren't always accurate. something must have gone wrong within the scripting. deleting cookies and voting again wouldn't add up to 18,000.

josephine, the kc scene hasn't turned on you. we still love you. keep rocking!

life in jersey, congratulations on the win! im looking forward to see you on sunday!

that's all.

Flee The Seen won Best Punk band at the PMA's because:

1. They were nominated. Jospehine was not nominated and thus could not have won the award. josephine was not nominated b/c no one outside of the OP screamo scene has ever seen them play.

2. People voted for them more than the other bands in the punk catagory.

3. Kelly, like anywhere else in the graphable universe, KC is what you make of it. In the case of the music scene, you can go to shows, buy local records from locally owned record stores, listen to local radio shows and generally get aquainted with music/bands/artists/people that you like OR you can sit on the sidelines and snipe about how pissed off you are that we all won't validate you and your love for josephine by embracing them completely and unconditionally.

RONNIE TEAGUE DEVOE ISNT BITTER NO WAY, THAT HE NEVER MADE IT BIG WIT MUSIC. umm clearly that dude up ther somewere hasnt been to many shows of josephine, cause ive missed like 7 shows in the area in the last like 2 years. and ive spoken wit at least a couple band members at every show. ive gotten ther autograph a couple times wen they were busy doin somtin but they didnt say hey not now(u might be thinkn well duh) but seriously its pretty common for people to be ass's about givin autographs or takin a pic wit a fan. these guys have never shown that since i have seen them. another thing johnson county, jackson county are u fukn serious. the used(just to use as an example not just because they are comin here) came out of fuking utah. i dont think it matters were they fuckn come from they can still have emotion. two if u have heard an ounce of the so called "emo" scene u would no that josephine is definitly not emo, so these 25 year old people who missed the whole scene should shut up about emo and girl pants, cause they dont fucking wear girl pants and they dont fuckin make emo music. third to the guy that said why does it take 7 people. well if u actually listin to ther music ITS FUCKN CRAZY ther is so much music coming together and it sounds so well. and its diffrent. the only thing i can honestly say left which doesnt matter cause someone will prolly just post one after mine and it will never be read. so go see a josephine collective show, if u have and u dont like em ok thats u, but dont dog on em cause of fucking myspace. congrats life in jersey have fun. honestly i believe voting was fukn rigged not even gonna lie. but hey thats life. by the way while im here WAT THE FUCK IS WITH FLEE THE SEEN WINNING BEST PUNK BAND AT THE PITCH AWARDS ARE U FUKING SERIOUS THEY ARNT EVEN PUNK!!! you guys fuckn suck.

1. "Why is it bash on Johnson County Day?" - Because josephine has never made any kind of effort to play anywhere other than Overland Park, Leavenworth and Truman Lake...yet they come out swinging about the "KC Scene". The last time i saw them play in KCMO, they were packed up in the van and gone five minutes after they were done playing....speaks volumes that they seem to not be interested in metting anyone who might be involved in the aforementioned "KC Scene" before, after or durring the show. (as in: there IS a scene here b/c we have all met and hung out together or at least exchanged pleasantrys)
Thus, when johnson county people act as though johnson county were the center of the universe... esp with regards to the music scene in "KC" where so many of us have so much skin in the game...it becomes bash on johnson county day. Don't like it? Tough shit. You got the school system..we get the culture.

2. Furthermore, the "support" that the josephine boys and thier partisans so demand is a two-way street. People who want to be part of a "scene" support others in the scene. ie: we go to one another's shows, buy one another's records, borrow one another's gear and get one another's drinks. Josephine being conspicuously absent from the audience at most shows i can remember and clearly in no hurry to get to know anyone other than thier own O.P. inner-circle. Cool. Fine. No one is FORCED to participate, but i do take umbrage when a non-participant cries foul that they are not getting the "support" they are entitled to from a scene that they themselves don't support. No one is entitled to anything here.

3. The story i got was that Life In Jersey worked thier asses off, handing out flyers, doing a bazillion email blasts, etc, etc to get the votes that they got. Good for them b/c the other story i heard was that josephine almost never leaves the O.P. house where they practice. I could not give less of a fuck who plays with the Used...but i like the idea that hard work gets rewarded.

4. Grow some fucking grapes. The Axl Rose comparison is apt if only in that he was ANOTHER aritst who could not seem to handle his business with any degree of discretion or dignity. Making a public spectacle and alleging all manner of conspiracy when things don't go your way is truly some limp-dicked, thin-skinned, crybaby bullshit.

Well first, why is it always bash on Johnson County day. Because kids from the suburbs can never make good music, they must have not original thoughts or their emotions are not real. It makes no sense. We all have emotions, just because you live in Jackson County and go to some shitty bar in midtown doesn't make you better than anyone.
And let's all remember this started by a crappy blog by a holier than thou music writer for The Pitch. Who patrols myspace for blog fodder. There really isn't enough music that you have to troll local bands myspace pages.
If you want a good music blog, read Tim Finn's Back to Rockville from The Star.
And we don't even have enough time to start on The Buzz. If Jo Co knew what was good for them, they would leave those folks behind and let them do their thing. From what I have seen, there is bigger and better things ahead of them. They are playing rock music for their jobs. If you don't think all of us retard responders to the blog would not do the same, you are crazy.

Harper points out that the capital of the KC scene is the Record Bar. This is true for the Metropolitan area.

KC itself needlessly sprawls in all directions. Its easy to be unfamiliar with Robert Moore and Josephine Collective both.

However, if you're living in Overland Park, and dropping out, dude, can I take your place in some classes? I mean, if you're forfeiting a seat. You all have a great school system and there are some thing's I'd like to learn.

Ronnie, thanks for justification through your attempt at recrimination...

As you said "Good luck getting somewhere with music, and enjoy the ride while it lasts, but the likelihood that you'll actually make money from the deal is slim."

Since these guys started the Warner demo process 3 years ago when most of them were still in High School(yeah these no talent hacks are the first "non indy label" band signed by Warner in 4 years), all they've heard is "no big deal, bands sign all the time and get nowhere..." That is if they heard anything at all...

Best comment from Jeriney when JoCo kicked off the local bands hosting Homegrown was "Yeah I used to hate you guys..." She didn't even know them?!?! Because while all these Jeriney's MySpace Top 8 bands were hanging out at America's Pub doing Homegrown, these kids were driving a $1000 Suburban to Dallas to do free shows.

In the end, Dillon showed his teen age by posting without truly thinking through the emotion...But that's what 19 year old artists do...I do know that there is nothing he or the band love more than their fans here in K.C.

SO go see that same passion for yourself by seeing their show...Or keep sitting there saying "yeah they got signed but they'll be working at Barnes & Noble soon..."

1. As someone who has actually played in bands around town for (likely) longer than the guys in JOCO have had instruments...give it a fucking rest. I've seen a lot of people get signed by labels, major or not, and end up working at Barnes and Noble or Jimmy John's after the hype settles down and reality sets in. Good luck getting somewhere with music, and enjoy the ride while it lasts, but the likelihood that you'll actually make money from the deal is slim. Watching this whole situation play out is amazing, like some sort of weird horrible myspace bastardized "making of the band" documentary; these kids have "THE DUDE FROM GOLDFINGER OMG!" come in, promise them the world, and get their little 20 year old brains flipped on to the point where they believe their own hype, and start to run off at the mouth. I've never even fucking heard of this horrible ass "collective" (why do you need 7 people to make totally generic mall emo?) until the Pitch ran their "OMG DUDEZ GOT SIGNED" article, but I also don't rely on myspace for musical/cultural discovery.

2. Message directly to the guys: Run "myspace bulletin damage control" all you want, but the fact of the matter is no one wants to hear you bitch about your own hometown. It is frustrating that our all ages venue situation is crappy, and we're all horribly sorry that some stupid radio contest may or may not have been rigged so that some other band gets the SAME CHANCE THAT YOU HAVE IN 20 OTHER CITIES to get exposed to new people. Getting your girl jeans tied up in a bunch isn't going to help anything, and only puts you at odds with the people that you're looking to for support...your hometown. Do something positive to change the things you don't like. Start a fucking all ages club since you guys have such a sweet advance and way too much time on your hands. Put your money where your ridiculous myspace mouth is. If you don't like KC, then fucking get out already. It's not like "the scene" is going to fall apart without you. LA is full of kids with record deals that are all puffing full of the smoke that's been blown up their ass by A&R guys.

3. It's AXL Rose. You're both fucking tards.

4. Also, love the Dillon post on here. Sweet random ass horrible shitty poetry. Sorry you weren't better at football, jocko.

Kansas City music scene? does it really make a difference what city the music comes from? The only thing that matters is the music, and if a band is from any certain city, it doesnt make them a flagship for that city

And secondly EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO GET MAD, i'm sure if you were trying to get to something as big as buzz beach ball and didnt make it and on top of that lose by an incredibly suspicious margine, you might be just a wee bit peturbed, and by the way, i dont see anyone here trying to do anything close what josephine is doing, so shut the fuck up.

First, I don't understand where Dillon gets off saying that the Kansas City scene sucks. I mean, hell, didn't Life In Jersey (a band from KANSAS CITY) get 18,000 votes?

Second, Dillon is being a bit of a hypocrite by saying, "no one helps each other out. it's all a battle." Uhh, Dillon, weren't YOU the one who got pissed off because you didn't win? Yes, yes you were. "To change the world, you must first change yourself." --Ghandi

Thirdly, don't ever fucking blame the fans or talk shit on your hometown because of your shortcomings. Sure, it's blatantly obvious that Life In Jersey cheated (or someone cheated for them), but roll with it. I'm sure that you all were absolutely positive that you'd be opening for The Used in your hometown..I mean, I was...but you're not. Get over it. Go get famous, and represent Kansas well. Cut your whiny cry baby shit out. Nobody wants to hear it.

Anywho--I'm looking forward to watching you guys at Kansas City Warped. You guys make sweetass music. Music that I'm excited for the world to hear. Congratuations and good luck!

i don't think the kid who wrote back from the jc knows who robert moore is. that says a lot about his knowledge about the kansas city scene.

the music end of the pitch has always favored the same damn bands for years, new music my ass, they are all friends with jason harper.. as soon as he is replaced, his pull in the "old dude bands with money scene" will deflate. now the homegrown buzz wont play new music from anyone outside this buddy club. they still play music from local bands who arent even together anymore. these jaded assholes need to go. its time for a change in attitude.

does the josephine collective sound anything like the juliana theory?

you're going to end up wearing a headset mic, dawg.

music constests are dumb. if you really "play because you love your art," why complain?

and did i read this right? are you playing with the used at OTHER dates than the KC date, you're going to miss out on that one show, and it's a huge deal?

a "scene" mostly loves those who love it back.
shit-talking the local paper's music editor isn't going to do you much good in the "loving it back" department, bruh.

Republic Tigers have more talent than the 4 other bands combined. I'm glad they weren't added to the pathetic lineup of redundant corporate shit rock. p.s. dylan teague devoe= fucking choad.

JOCO is the greatest kc band ever, idc wat this bullshit magazne says. and they seriously had a good point the voting was fuckin rigged as shit. and if u cant see that then ur blind as hell. so now i get to go see life in jersey(not to be a hater) but they sound just like everythin else. doesnt even compare to josephines music and live shows wich are epic. like last nights. u prolly wont see that at a in about 98% of the kc bands. theyve earned every bit of wat they got. just to get robbed in a piss poor voting. o and so wat if they get to play the next month with the used. it would probably be nice to play in there own home town with em. all i can say is josephine collective is an awesome band, and are very loyal to ther fans, and all i got to say now is FUCK YOUUUUU, the only good thing u ever wrote was about superblack market.

Josephine is good and all, but I think it's them taking the scene for granted not the fans. I've payed multiple times to get into shows in Leavenworth just to see them, and had them not show up.

It kind of blows in case you're reading this Dillon. To show up wanting to see a good band, and sit through a night of genric 15 year olds, and then you guys don't show up

Deflate your head a little, Axl Rose

fuck you so called journalist. you must have some issues of your own to tear down a band that has something goin for them. trying to take away their glory with your little piss ant post, just to get a rise out of people like me and completely have to much time on your hands.

FUCK YOU.
