Callin' Out the Rock Songbirds / Shows at the River Market Brewery

Posted by Jason Harper on Thu, Aug 23, 2007 at 11:44 AM

Thanks to local musicians' dogged use of MySpace, I've learned a couple of things already today.

1. It looks like the Last of the V8s are quitsville. Their profile headline says "Goodnight...," and the poster for their Pitch Awards Show performance (see here and here) had billed it as their last show ever. I talked to a member of the band two days after that show, and all I got from that conversation was that the band's future was uncertain.

But maybe it involves a lady lead vocalist?

V8s drummer Kriss Ward sent out the following bulletin this morning.

Subject: You or someone you know...

Body: could be the next female lead singing rocknroll superstar in Kansas City!

Disiples of primative rock are searching for a female lead vocalist!

If you've never heard of The Stooges, The Bellrays, The Sonics, The Animals, The MC5 or Hellacopters don't hit me back.

If you're hip, do it!

Wonder who, besides Kriss, these "disiples" are? Well, if they get a hard-charging neolithic rock band going with a badass chick out front, I'll pay to see that. Especially if the lady is someone new and not at all influenced by Karen O. Please? Thank you.

2. And from Lovers In Transit's Jeremiah Gonzales:

Tired of the westport bustle? Tired of paying a cover? We hear that!

Which is why we are putting on a free show for our friends and fans in KC. Consider it an appreciation for you of sorts. And a reason to try somewhere new. Come down to the River Market Brewery and witness Jeremiah and Bronson doing some experimental solo pieces...might not happen again....but it will be FUN!

Where: River Market Brewery (5th and Walnut)

When: 9 pm

With: Travoltron

Cost: FREE

(we will go on around 11)

Come out and rock out with us this Friday night, drink some good local beer, and bring all your friends!

The last time I went to the RMB, it was after a First Friday sojourn that left me and my friends hungry and thirsty and wanting a place off the beaten egg. Someone suggested the River Market Brewery. So, we went. And we witnessed the saddest, lamest karaoke night ever. Picture a cheeseball of a host determined to dance and dork it up whether anyone was into it or not. I admired his resolve, along with the enthusiasm of the half-dozen people who participated, most of whom were pre-teenaged girls. But it was about as much fun as sticking a dart into your forearm.

So, all that's to say: Yay for local bands at the underutilized RMB, even though "Jeremiah and Bronson doing some experimental solo pieces" sounds a bit odd. Why not the whole band? Why not kick things off with a bash? I've heard that Jon Yeager's doing the booking. Anyone heard anything?

And WTF is Travoltron? Love the name.
