Been Caught Stealing

(Ah the twisted, perplexed look of someone who is being sued a quarter of a million dollars for copying, among other atrocities, a Richard Marx song.)

Minnesota resident Jammie Thomas has been ordered to fork over $220,000 to the RIAA for sharing songs 24 songs on Kazaa, marking the first copyright infringement case to ever go to trial. Here’ the mixtape that did her in:

Guns ‘n’ Roses, “Welcome to the Jungle”, “November Rain”

Vanessa Williams, “Save the Best for Last”

Janet Jackson, “Let’s Wait Awhile”

Gloria Estefan, “Here We Are”, Coming Out of the Dark”, “Rhythm is Gonna Get You”

Goo Goo Dolls, “Iris”

Sarah McLachlan, “Building a Mystery”, “Possession”

Aerosmith, “Cryin’”

Linkin Park, “One Step Closer”

Green Day, “Basket Case”

No Doubt, “Bathwater”, “Hella Good”, “Different People”

Sheryl Crow, “Run Baby Run”

Destiny’s Child, “Bills, Bills, Bills”

Journey, “Faithfully”, “Don’t Stop Believin’”

Def Leppard, “Pour Some Sugar on Me”

Reba McEntire, “One Honest Heart”

Bryan Adams, “Somebody”

Richard Marx, “Now and Forever”

Wow, talk about adding insult to injury.

This one’s for you Jammie, a Team9 elixir of Hard-Fi, Jay-Z, Abba and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. You look like you could use it.

Christmas in March

After six years in the making, it looks like the Flaming Lips’ full-length film, Christmas on Mars, is finally going to happen in March. Maybe. According to Billboard , Wayne Coyne is planning on turning the movie into a live experience with a possible premier at next spring’s SXSW. Watch the trailer.

Looks a bit like a low-budget version of Flash Gordon, if that’s possible. Let’s hope the Lips do a cover of that Queen song for the soundtrack.

Cat Nip

According to UK tabloids, indie-rock’s poster child for rehab, Pete Doherty, recently lost custody of his kitty after feeding it cocaine. At least now someone can empathize with Britney. His second Babyshambles LP hits the US in two weeks. Here’s an alternate take on the first single from Shotter’s Nation.

Jaguar Rock

If you can get past this week’s Chiefs loss, check out the Black Kids, a Jacksonville outfit that takes after non-Florida acts like Tokyo Police Club and the Cure. The debut EP, Wizard of Ahhhs, is free to download at the band’s MySpace page.

Dark Horse Prequel

After the critical acclaim (and Polaris Music Prize nomination) brought on by The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse, the Montreal six-piece is reissuing its 2003 debut, Vol. 1, on October 23. Here’s a track.

BKLYN

I’m strangely drawn to the new Mobius Band album cover. Is that an apple she’s eating? A pear? A huge lime? The Brooklyn-based electro-pop group released Heaven last week. Here’s the juicy first track.

Mobius Band: “Hallie” MP3

Also holding down the Brooklyn indie scene, the Fiery Furnaces return this Tuesday with Widow City, the brother/sister duo’s first release on Thrill Jockey Records. Here’s a preview.

You gotta love Steve Burns from Blues Clues in that Lips trailer saying, "We are fucked!" I can't wait to see this film; Christmas 2003 is just around the corner...
