The Beaumont

Note to self: Get a better camera.

Review and Photos by Crystal K. Wiebe

The Beaumont Club was so packed last night that getting close enough to the bands to take decent pictures with a crappy point-and-shoot digital camera was laughable. I tried to make up for the distance between myself and the stage by utilizing the zoom button and turning off my flash. Of course, that just resulted in a bunch of blur.

But sometimes, that’s exactly what hardcore sounds like, so maybe my ineptitude is a little poetic.

Here are my favorite “artistic” shots of the night.

Every Time I Die zips around the stage. Guess what every song was about? Hint: Dying.

These kids would die for Every Time I Die screamer Keith Buckley. It makes their parents mad.

It’s almost like you can see into Underoath frontman Spencer Chamberlain’s soul. But only God can do that.

The pure white light shines down on Chamberlain. This is just a few minutes before he gave one of his famous homilies about his love for Jesus.

For the last song of the night, Underoath invited the whole crowd onto the stage. During the five minutes of mayhem that ensued, some band members didn’t even attempt to play, opting instead to swing like monkeys from the light rig as fans felt them up.

Things I wish I'd photographed:

- The girl on crutches who hopped backwards out of the fray when Every Time I Die announced that it was time for a circle pit.

- The mid-30s couple who were practically having sex near the sound booth. She would pretend like she was going to kung fu kick him but then just wrap her leg around him and commence sucking on his face. They fed each other ice. They groped each other. And they almost ruined the show for that poor girl on crutches next to them and a bunch of other teenage fans of Underoath. Thanks, mom and dad.

- Any of the kids who staggered out of the crowd, one arm around a buddy and the other hand pressed against a sore face.

- The random drunk kid who insisted on taking a picture with me for no apparent reason.

- The other bands on the night's bill: Poison the Well and Maylene and the Sons of Disaster.
