Dispatches from the Record Bar

Posted by Jason Harper on Mon, Dec 3, 2007 at 4:12 PM

Pitch calendar editor Crystal K. Wiebe spent Saturday and Sunday night at the Record Bar. Here's her report.

The coolest things I saw at the Record Bar last weekend. By C.K.W.

1. The Back to the Future car parked outside on Saturday. A surefire sign that the Electric Six show would be a hella fun geek convention.

2. The climax of the opening set by the Willowz, during which the – I have to say it – willowy singer climbed up on a drum and stuffed his guitar into the ceiling rafters and then swung from the cable before running off stage.

3. Electric Six frontman Dick Valentine’s joy in mocking his “Overland Park drummer.” Never have cul de sacs, Starbucks and stock portfolios seemed so pertinent to rock and roll.

4. Valentine’s musical proclamation that “infected girls do it better.”

5. Everything Valentine said. But especially his sarcastic order to the crowd at the end of his band’s set: “Don’t touch us.” Because they’re infected, of course.

6. And on Sunday night Alina Simone on stage with just her electric guitar, singing Russian punk rock. Now I know who Yanka Dyagileva is.

And some things that sucked.

1. Missing all but the last two Willowz songs because I relied on the set times listed at therecordbar.com.

2. Getting pinned between a table at the front of the dance floor and the Electric Six superfan who was dancing like it was his favorite cousin's wedding. Why are there tables on your dance floor, anyway, Record Bar?

3. The girl in the silver, square dancing type skirt. Please don’t wear anything to a busy rock show that makes you take up twice as much space as normal.

It is culs de sac, not cul de sacs. Are there no editors at The Pitch?

Heya, glad you had a good time.

We apologize greatly for the misunderstanding about the set times.
1.
The show was being promoted by Hunt Industries and there was miscommunication concerning start times. I requested for them to push it back and they gave in a bit. I'm still confused why a show would be over by 11pm on a Saturday. We will work harder to have correct info on out website from now on.
2,
Now, as far as the tables go, again a misunderstanding. Now that we are open for lunch, we use the dance floor area for seating. We had a really strong dinner rush at 8pm. I'm guessing people were eating at them well until the show started in which it was difficult for staff to move them.
3,
Yeah, what you said.

Thanks for the input. We are always trying to do better!
