Yeah, yeah, yeah – it's David Cook Day. I take no issue with the American Idol contender, who, from what little I know about him, seems like an OK character. He's even willing to pass up the opportunity to sing the national anthem at Kauffman Stadium so that little kids can.

Cook took the outdoor stage in the Power & Light District today amidst a cacophony of screams and hoots. People waved homemade signs that featured a lot of scrawled hearts and the initials DC. After being handed some official certificate – signed by the governor, who was there via a previously recorded video – proclaiming this a statewide holiday, Cook proceeded to knock out a couple of tunes on his guitar.

In a pleasant tenor, he covered Bon Jovi’s "Living on a Prayer" and Mariah Carey’s "Always Be My Baby." I’m not an American Idol fan, so it was the first time I’d heard Cook sing. Granted, I instantly forgot his rendition of "Always Be My Baby." (Carey’s version has now been on a loop in my head all day.) But, really, the boy from Blue Springs is no better – or worse – than other male providers of non-confrontational acoustica -- James Blunt and Gavin DeGraw come to mind.

And he seems confident. He worked the crowd by raising and lowering his hands to control the level of cheering and applause. Even if he wins the big TV show, though, and records a few original songs, there’s no guarantee that Cook will survive long in the messed up industry that is music. And if he does – well, there are much worse things that Missouri has launched on the world. Like Applebee's.

It was rather interesting for me to read that post. Thank you for it. I like such topics and everything that is connected to this matter. I definitely want to read a bit more on that blog soon.

Crystal should be fired because she is a bad writer who doesn't know anything about the topic of her article.
The Pitch is a POS paper. People used to think it was funny now people just think the writers are bithcy and bitter. I'm done reading this paper!

Well said, Robert.

And to the persons here who have suggested that Crystal shouldn't get paid for writing a critique like this: You shouldn't get paid for sitting at home or at your day job Googling your favorite American Idol contestants every five minutes and attacking real writers with anonymous hate mail.

Oh wait, you're not getting paid!

You're doing it on your own free time!

Sucker.

David Cook already has millions of fans and he will continue to succeed!!!! I, for one, love his voice!!!! He's caused me to have a mini-crush on him and he's a little/probably too young for me (11 years)!!!!! :)

Crystal will eat her words!!!!!!

Aren't you supposed to do your homework before you critique someone. David cook is able to knock them out of the park every week. You don't even bother to be informed. I can only hope this is a free gifg for you. You don't deserve 10 cents an hour for this bs.

Maybe you should do more research on your subject if you don't know "much about them." I've read more crap in the news about David Cook and the other contestants...all because writers don't do their research. That's not what I thought good writing was all about for publication. Why would anyone take you seriously?

Geez, what a b----. If your mind weren't so totally closed and you listened to someone like Pepper, maybe you'd find out that David Cook is a major, original talent whom America is discovering and embracing. Of course, you announced your ignorance in your lede, "from what little I know about him." I hope you don't get paid for this.

What a pleasure to see a man of such wild talent with substance, both personal and professional. Makes me proud. Take a listen to David's solo album Analog Heart if you are unhappy with covers. Its amazing. Total heart and soul. And your reviewer should not be so negative towards a hometown fella doing his personal best.

Why are there massive crowds for a guy like this when local bands with original music have trouble filling tiny venues? American Idol isn't finding the next big star. It is finding the next singer who can belt out a cover.

Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed today or are you always like this? I sure hope it's the former. Lighten up.

Why does every story the Pitch writes have to be negative? Can't you just be happy for a local guy that's big news right now?
