Argument Machine Turns Over New Leaf and Degriefs

Posted by Jason Harper on Fri, May 23, 2008 at 12:46 PM

Just now, I went over to the Argument Machine, that longstanding source of occasional music-scene gossip, and found that it is no more, or rather that it has transformed into something else. Something ... happy. At the old URL, the proprietor left this explanation [emphasis added].

Try this instead. It has been named the "Degriefer." For now you can get there from www.degriefer.com, www.ungriefer.com, www.agreementmachine.com, and www.argumentmachine.com. Maybe even www.wellallright.com .

I think some of you had a bookmark that bookmarked a file ending in .html or .htm. I'm sorry about that. The others, who were just directed to the domain, were redirected to the link above.

It isn't clear what it will be named, and who will run it. But it will be difficult to get in pissing contests there; use the fact that it will host your multimedia to your advantage, and try to enlighten folks.

The AM may not have to go. I may leave some shell of it up, but it will be anonymous and difficult to develop a "persona" behind. We are far too creative to be sitting around lobbing snark grenades at each other and perfect strangers, and I feel like the premise of the AM was exactly that.

This new format may seem clunky, but it will serve similar purposes, and it will work out for the best for the more creative of you.

I hate to sound like a hippie or emo or whateverthefuck, but if you are making someone's life suck in any way, please stop. Even if they offend you in very tangible and plentiful ways. No one, no matter how wrongheaded they are, deserves to be berated and belittled.

If you are too unsophisticated to operate any other way, you are still welcome here. I hope that my more sophisticated colleagues will know better than to egg you on. Anyway, you should try to find a different way of dealing with folks.
