NYC blogger Brad Walsh thinks Kansas City is the "New New York City." Why? Because we spawned the Republic Tigers, Alicia Solombrino, the Ssion and "20 or so transplanted club kids with more original style than I've seen around here in a long time." Walsh made his bold claim in a May 27 post on his blog at junk-mag.com. Also in the post: a bunch of artsy pics he took of Solombrino and streams of "Touch Me" by the Beautiful Bodies and "Buildings and Mountains" by the Republic Tigers. A second post features "Golden Sand" by the Republic Tigers.

Just who the fuck is Brad Walsh, though? He's a photographer and founder of Junk Magazine, an indie hipster culture rag that went all digital in 2005. Walsh's other claim to fame is being the boyfriend of Project Runway dude Christian Siriano. None of that makes Walsh's opinion worth that much -- but, hey, it's nice to see well-connected out-of-towners lovin' on our city and its almost famous peeps.

Brad's poorly-written post says more about what's (not) happening in NYC these days than about KC.

Is Lawrence the new Hoboken? I always thought it was the old Athens, GA. This is so confusing.

i dont know that id go as far as calling it the "new new york city" but theres so much great stuff coming out of kansas city. plain and simple. also, i dont even think of those three bands as being among the best in kansas city. there are far better in my opinion but i am ready for everyone to see how great of a scene kc has.

i'm just sad its gonna happen after i moved away...

If I say that NYC is the new Cleveland in a blog, will that get reported in a Cleveland or NYC blog as gospel because I'm from the new NYC?

Also, when did aping Karen O, starting a really shitty "ooh I'm sexy" band and myspacing one's way to the top become really original?

No offense to the Ssion (who are hilarious and righteous), but Alicia is just a hanger-on'er whose only discernable talent is being in the right place at the right time and having multi-colored hair. I don't see anyone listening to "Touch Me" in 4 years and thinking "wow, this was an amazing time for KC music".

if you don't know who is and his opinion doesn't matter, then why did you just post an entire blog about him?
