The Foo Fighters: Get There Early for a Disaster

Posted by Jason Harper on Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 12:05 PM

You already know the Foo Fighters are playing this Saturday, July 19, at Kemper Arena.

And we've already told you lots about openers Supergrass.

Oh, Supergrass ... love them.

But another band worth loving a little, too, is going on first, at 7:15, to be exact: Year Long Disaster.

More on the band, plus audio/visuals, after the jump.

This hip-shaking, riff-quaking L.A. threesome has a nice little history with The Pitch. Back in 2006, we got wind that the trio, which comprises Kinks offspring Daniel "Son of Dave" Davies (guitar, vox), Rich Mullins (bass) and Brad Hargreaves (drums), was coming through our town and playing, of all places, Fred P. Ott's on the Plaza. Excited both to break the band to readers and to shine the light on a $2 Sunday night show at P. Ott's, we ran a feature, which, randomly headlined "Annum Terriblus," oddly prefigured the band's own use of Latin on its debut self-titled album, which has two Latin-titled tracks.

Anyway, the group has an interesting story. Davies and Mullins (who is a veteran of the bands Karma to Burn and Speedealer) met by chance in the liquor section of a grocery store, began talking music, became friends, and proceeded to go on a drug binge. They even did crack.

"It was pretty predominant with us," Davies told The Pitch in '06. "We did plenty of the other ones, too ... like, I don't know, is heroin considered the rock drug?"

Fortunately, the two checked into rehab and came out clean at the end of 2003, the year for which the band is named. Then, at a gig in Glendale, Arizona, they picked up Hargreaves, who had been a drummer for Third Eye Blind (that detail being possibly the strangest thing in this whole story). And the rest is history.

Onto the music and lights.

Here's a video for one of YLD's fine Roman songs, "Leda Atomica." It was directed by Matt Maillero of Aqua Teen Hunger Force fame and named after this painting. Cultured, these lads.

Another song for ya, this one titled in Spaghetti Western.

Year Long Disaster: "Per Qualche Dollaro In Piu"

And if you're tired of all the 20th century cultural references, here's a Southern fried jam without a fancy title.

Year Long Disaster: "Let Me Down"

Year Long Disaster rules! I love that sound. Very Queens of the Stone Age meets Soundgarden. And you know that to be two of my faves. Thanks for shedding light on something I'll now have to spend money on, dude.
