Brief Dispatch: Jack Johnson at Capitol Federal Park at Sandstone

If you closed your eyes on Friday night, the breeze and the sounds of Jack Johnson's ukulele almost made Capitol Federal Park at Sandstone feel like the beach. The surfer-boy-slash-singer-songwriter performed for about two hours at the outdoor amphitheater in Bonner Springs. Beach balls bobbed over the top of the crowd; so did a couple of people early in the set.

Looking as laid back as ever in a t-shirt and blue jeans, Johnson plunked through most of his feelgood favorites, including "Bubble Toes" and "Banana Pancakes," as well as a lot of feelgood-sounding songs that actually contain social commentary, like "Fall Line" and "The News."

Gorgeous weather aside, Sandstone seemed like a good fit for the environmentally conscious musician, who used solar energy to record his latest album, Sleep Through the Static. The folks behind the venue would have you believe it's an increasingly "green" facility. There are even signs with tips on how to be a more environmentally responsible concertgoer at Sandstone's entrance. But any positive impact of carpooling was reversed at the end of the show, when hundreds of cars idled, motionless, for upwards of an hour thanks to bottlenecking at the exit.

I agree with you both on this very important issue. It is very unfortunate for those who claim to love Jack Johnson's music but apparently do not understand what he stands for. I could not help but become upset myself after I saw the beer cans strewn across the lawn of sandstone, who is taking initiatives to become "green", not to mention the cans and water bottles that were hanging from the trees. The plastic trash bags were another horrific site being at the beginning of Jack's concert a huge message came across the screen explaining the horrific effects that plastics have on our environment. It makes you wonder if someone like Jack Johnson, who is very influential to those of us who get his music and lyrics, has an ampetheatre full of people, and the majority of them don't follow his environmental message, and simply pick up after yourself, What is going to become of us in a few years? We need change, and change starts with us. Jack has a simple message, for those of you who don't get it, open your eyes, your ruining it for the rest of us. As far as Sandstone goes, props to them for taking initiaives and "going green", Maybe placing recycling bins throughout the lawn or at least placing them more sporatic around the venue could help those who have trouble locating even a trash can.

I share your feelings, Heather, about Jack Johnson's messages being lost on the fans. It sure seemed like there were a lot of rodeo clowns in the audience -- maybe that's why he didn't play that song.

I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO EMBARRASED IN ALL MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People are so self-centered and lazy, they could not pick up their trash and throw it away on their way out of the gates. They even had trash bags to sit on so their butts didn't get wet. I would think those people could have filled up those trash bags instead of leaving them and the trash for someone else to pick up. Obviously there are people out there who don't understand Jack Johnson's music and what he stands for and for those people to attend his show and still not get a clue, makes me sad. For those of you who picked up your trash, thank you. For those of you who didn't, you should all be ashamed of yourselves. I am ashamed to live in the city I am in and with the people here after this event. I hope this will not keep Jack from coming to KC again. We need alot of work here and I would love to see him again.
