Republic Tigers and Dri Get Soundtrack Love from Semi-Local Filmmakers

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of entertaining a visit from Laura Boersma and John Stewart Muller, LA-based filmmakers who grew up in Kansas City. They were looking for music to add to the soundtrack of their recent film Fling, which they shot last year entirely in KC and environs. Here's a picture of Boersma standing in Bloomsday Books (now no longer operating physically), where one of the scenes was shot.

Though Boersma and Muller already had some kickass orginal score music by Grammy-nominated composer Nick Urata (Little Miss Sunshine and Devotchka), the two were looking for some local sounds. So, in the days preceding the comely Angelinos' visit, I shaved between my eyebrows, fumigated my office and clothing to rid them of that rotting corpse smell I often struggle with, and I then compiled a list of KC and Lawrence bands that I thought would go well with an indie flick about sexy love triangles, circles and parallelograms. Turned out that most of my choices were too predictably Garden State/OC-ish for Laura and John's discerning tastes. (To protect the guilty, I won't mention any of the bands I initially suggested, but five of them were the New Tragedies.)

Already hip to the Republic Tigers, two of whose songs Fling will feature, Laura and John were also smitten with Dri, whose song "Two Are One" seemed made for this film. I'm not sure if that's the Dri song they're going to use, but they are using one of the Lawrence singer's tracks, along with rocking jams from the likes of El-P, the Pink Mountaintops and others. See the whole list here.

And mark your calendar: Fling will be shown in Kansas City at Screenland beginning November 14, running for a week. "We're so excited to show everyone how awesome KC looks on film!" says Boersma. Dri and others (possibly Nick Urata himself) will perform at the Nov. 14 screening afterparty at the Czar Bar.

Here's a preview of le film.

I went back and added in the bit about the Czar Bar to this entry (end of par. 4) before I saw your comment, Billy. I think I might know who the Denver act may be!

Czar Bar is hosting the official after party for the opening of FLING on November 14th.
This will include some of the bands featured in the film. One that we are crossing our fingers for is from Denver. Yay~!
