What the F(M)? 99.7 Boulevard Now Kiss?

Posted by Jason Harper on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 5:10 PM

997kiss.jpg

The above image is what you see when you go to www.997theboulevard.com.

We're as surprised as you are, folks. Imagine the shock of people driving home, expecting the usual "quality rock" and instead getting Top 40 and ... gahgahgahgagaaag Ryan Seacrest's syndicated show. This is way worse than when KY became the Boulevard. Expect delays on the drive home in the coming weeks -- due, mainly, to multi-car pileups.

Why, Entercom, why!?!?!

We will investigate. Stay tuned.

What a shame - another day the music died. What can be done to protest this travesty besides boycotting the station? Maybe flood their fax machine with complaints??? Some serious anti-crap music mail???

What i want to know is where were all of you when ratings were so horrible that for entercom to make a profit for the station they had to pull the plug. Now im not saying the music was horrible but if you look at the ratings and yes that it was PD's look at when running a station, it was getting killed by everyone, including the TOP 40 crap you call it. Entercom had no other option but to pull the plug.

What a bummer!

We get a rock station comparable to the album rock of KY102 in the mid 70's, and what happens? The geeeeedy F----S of corporate America return us back into the days of the hated "DISCO".

Hell, I think I would rather listen to disco than the trival s--t they play.
Why can't Kansas City have a big time rock station like the rest of the big cities in our country?

Maybe Obama can see the injustice and set it right. LOL.

Now we're back to listening to 101 playing Boston over and over and over again.

I, like many, tuned into 99.7 one day and heard some total crap playing. I tuned into something else and then 10 minutes or so later came back to 99.7, only to find that the crap continued. Entercom: I listened to 99.7 all the time. It has now been deleted from my radio presets. Unbelievable.

I had only just discovered the Boulevard last September 08. What a great station! They catered to 40 somethings while introducing the younger generations to "Real"music. I'm sorry to see it go.
You have got to have at least one good radio station in a city like ours to keep the younger crowd from moving away. Sprint Center and the Power and Light district just won't cut it. Look at Springfield MO. They have great stations. KC is a university town so come on let's keep at least one good station.

Figures -- "The Boulevard" lasted just over a year.

I might be in the minority here, but I didn't think the "format change" they made going from KY to The Boulevard was so great that it required a name/call letter change and a total DJ flush and refill. Sure, there were a lot more songs in the rotation, but it more and more sounded like a wider variety of the old KY as the year went on -- for the most part I found it acceptable.

While you (rightfully) complain about the demise of rock radio in KC, think about this: nowhere locally can you hear the rock artists that don't fit into 98.9's mold and have new material out -- 101 might play their old tunes, but who will play their current catalog? It's quite possible there will be chart-topping rock music out there that will not be played in KC because it's not heavy/crunchy enough for 98.9 and it's too new for 101.

Another thing we're severely lacking is a station (with enough power to be heard all over town) that will stick it's neck out and play LOCAL TALENT. We've needed that for decades, I always hoped The Planet would have held on and done this. If local talent can't even get airplay in their home town it sure doesn't make promoting them elsewhere any easier.......

Corporate Radio has got to be secretly involved with the satellite radio providers, why else would they drive entire groups of listeners away with idiotic moves like this?

What the F***. I kept changing channels and coming back to 99.7, thought my radio was jacked up. I have been listening to rock n roll in KC since the 60s and the boulevard was one of if not the best stations I've ever heard. Great mix of rock, especially rarely heard cuts. How could they do this. The new format totally sucks. Perfect example that change is not always good. BRING BACK THE BOULEVARD.

I can't believe that you would change the format as you did. 99.7 The Blvd. was the best FM station in the metro area. I waited a long time for this city to produce a good FM station. For a city that prides itself with a history of music, the metro radio only seems to get worst and not better. No full time classical nor that of a Jazz station. Let's add to the list Fm Rock stations leave alot to be desired.
I have lived in other metro area's and The Blvd. was on par with great stations in much larger markets - New York, Chicago.
I would have liked to be a fly on the wall when you had your meeting regarding the change of format? "Well we really have a great FM Station in KC, what can we really do screw it up big time." If thats how the conversation went, you succeeded in your mission.
Bring back the old format and get rid of this crappy new one.
I never understood why someone whom is at the front of the line decides to go to the very back??

I was on my way to work this Saturday morning and assumed that my radio wasn't pulling in the correct station. During the week I have a rider and out of courtesy I don't play the radio. This morning being on my own I flipped to the Boulevard, to be unpleasantly surprised. The switch to KISS to somehow bring in more female listeners is faulty thinking and not a good business decision. I, being female, would much rather listen to classic rock. The new "music" is repetitive and not at all innovative. The girls all sound the same and unless someone tells you who is singing, the songs could be generated by computer robots. We can only hope and pray that someone with a modicum of sense at Entercom will realize their mistake and switch back. I do not predict that this format will last, but what will follow is up to the radio gods.

Waking up Tuesday to an early morning talk show was quite a jolt. WTF is going on over at Entercom? Is Max Floyd behind this? 99.7 has been replaced on my shower radio by 94.9.
In the car, it's XM Jam-on, coffeehouse, bluegrass or Grateful Dead. 90.9 has a real good station if you can pull their signal. I also like KKFI 90.1 if tunes are playing.

The Boulevard was an excellent station, and the DJ's were great. They were very knowledgible about the music and shared that with the listeners. The "perfect album side" and "9 @ 9" were great ideas to get the listeners invested in the station. I listened to 99.7 almost exclusively.

The press release mentioned your that the new format is very successful in NYC and LA. After living in KC for many years, living in LA for a short time, and working with people in NYC, I will tell you that Kansas Citians are nothing like the folks in NYC or LA.

It appears that the new format targets a younger audience. Since the discretionary income of the 40-55 year age group is much higher, it makes no business sense to target the 20 and 30-somethings with much less discretionary income.

Finally, the press release said that the new target audience is women. As a woman, I was offended by the chatter on the KISS format telling women they need to wear a skirt to pick up men. How demeaning. It seems to me, they are tageting women with more boobs than brains.

I can guarantee you I and thousands of other listeners will not be listening to that top-40 junk music or the advertising that pays their bills.

Goodbye, 99.7...

How many top 40 stations does that make in KC? And how many good stations are left now? Occassionally 96.5 or 101.1 with the seldom 94.9.

It's not even a smart business decision, because now it's competing against entrenched top 40 stations that haven't switched format in KC for 20+ years.

Now our classroom is stuck with 105.1 & 94.9 both fine but not as great as 99.7. In addition I listen to this in my car and at home - am really pissed I hope they move it to HD Radio or start another new station - it was a really good format unique :-(
