Before the Strokes reconvene in the studio next month, bassist Nikolai Fraiture is squeaking out a side project with the Britpop outfit, South, as his backing band. From the Nickel Eye band bio:

"When The Strokes' hiatus began taking longer than expected, Nikolai reached into an old shoebox of poems and rants written years ago. With his free time, he began adapting them to music."

The result of those idle hands is out today and includes guest spots from Regina Spektor and Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeah's). According to the band's MySpace page, we can also expect a Daytrotter session in the near future. Download the first single from The Time of the Assassins below, thanks to Spinner.

So this leaves Julian and the rhythm guitarist, whatever his name is, as the remaining Strokes to have not put out solo albums?
