Friday Night Highlights: Bacon 'n Be/Non

Posted by Jason Harper on Fri, Feb 6, 2009 at 2:13 PM

If you're out and about tonight in the Crossroads vicinity flitting about betwixt galleries hither and yon and happen to be in the mood for beats, bizarrity and bacon, drop by Midwestern Musical Co. at 19th and Locust around 9 p.m. for an intimate performance by the one and only Bacon Shoe.

Later, if you're feeling frisky, head down to the West Bottoms, to a newly reopened space across from the Pistol Social Club at 1219 Union. Not to be confused with the Mutual Musicians Foundation in the Jazz District, the just-plain Foundation is hosting the bands Mannequin Skywalker and Be/Non.

Over at the Record Bar, rural Ohio disco act Gil Mantera's Party Dream pays a visit, dispensing shirtlessness, synths and all the retro-'80s-themed, gay-disco irony that you'd ever want, and more. Example:

Opening for the Gil Manteras: the Monitors and Max Justuses. (When did it become cool to make everything plural? Why am I a victim? And what's with all the "man-"prefixed stuff? I got an e-mail today in which a guy mentioned a "man-beard" in reference to a man's beard. I can see why you'd say "woman-beard" to specify a beard on a woman, but ... is this a result the "man-purse" trend? Man-love? Mantyhose? Christ, I hope and pray I will never see a pair of mantyhose in person. I had better not go anywhere tonight.)

Over at Davey's, things get heavy, loud and manny with Federation of Horsepower and the Burning Fifteen and Sink or Swim.

At the Riot Room, an eclectic array of bands, featuring the Noise FM, the Abracadabras, '68 Comeback (not this '68 Comeback) and the regrettably named Regret, the Informer.

Fun fact: John Ferguson is in three of the bands mentioned above -- Bacon Shoe, the Monitor and Federation -- each of which is playing a different venue tonight. Motherfucker's gonna have a busy night. If you see him, buy him a sugar-free RockStar.

I think they played at Mint Ultra Lounge, where my creds are rejected at the door.
