Musician Health Care Watch: Sweet Relief benefit concert announced, Midwest Music Foundation founded

Posted by Jason Harper on Mon, Feb 16, 2009 at 4:18 PM

Shortly after my story on Abigail Henderson's struggle with breast cancer and health bills was published, a local doctor named Mark Matthews got in touch with me about the issue of health care for musicians. Matthews works with Sweet Relief, a national charity that has helped musicians in need since 1994. While I was working on "A Picture of Hope," Sweet Relief was in the process of reorganizing. Now, it's got a revamped Web site up, complete with directions on how to apply for aid. In addition, Matthews has just announced that Sweet Relief founder and beneficiary Victoria Williams will be coming to Liberty Hall in Lawrence on Friday, April 10. Also on the bill: Waterdeep and the Midday Ramblers. Tickets are $20 and proceeds go to the charity, of course.

And what about that Midwest Music Foundation -- you know, that local health care resource Henderson and her friends were starting? It's on, son! Check it out.
