Wanna star in a local production of The Rose?

Back when I used to get up on stage and squawk out solos at pop concerts and talent shows, I liked to do Bette Midler songs. Somewhere in the family archives is my mortifying rendition of "Wind Beneath My Wings." My cousin liked ol' Bette, too, but she always opted for "The Rose" -- the heartbreaking song from the movie of the same name. The film, which I confess I've never seen, was inspired by the tumultuous life of Janis Joplin. The Rose is 30 years old now, which makes it a good time, I guess, for the Urban Culture Project and Ron Megee to bring the story to a local stage. The show's going up at La Esquina in late July. If you've always dreamed of singing about "the soul afraid of dying," check out the Facebook page where you can sign up to audition on April 28. Don't worry -- my sweet-voiced cuz doesn't live in KC, so you might actually have a chance.
