Warning to local guitarists: come see Richard Lloyd tonight at the Record Bar and you'll likely want to lay your ax down forever. The man is a freak.
In case you missed the Critic's Choice in this past week's Pitch, tonight marks an encore of sorts to the Television man's August 1 show at the same venue. (I reviewed it, yo). Backed by his Sufi-Monkey Trio, comprising original TV drummer Billy Ficca and bassist Keith Harshtel, Lloyd played a roaring set loaded with guitar solos to make the gods weep, running down a few Television tunes, a few covers of his idol, Jimi Hendrix, and some newer tracks from the Sufi-Monkey catalog.
Fortunately, Lloyd and his monkeys put on a great show. And you don't have to be a music geek to enjoy it -- any more than you have to be a musician yourself to enjoy a professional jazz combo wailin' to the changes.
Here he is teaching you about heady music-theory stuff on guitar.
The show begins at 10 p.m. with fairly new local band Little Murders, featuring members of the late local bands the Occupation (Bill Cave, vox; Auggie Wolber, guitar) and Doris Henson (Byron Collum, bass; Wes Gartner, drums). Lloyd goes into the rock-guitar mystic at 11.
