Tonight: "New Directions In Jazz, Experimental and Improvised Music" + Snuff Jazz MP3

Posted by Jason Harper on Fri, May 8, 2009 at 7:36 AM

Looking for something that may be a little outside your normal everyday experience of music -- in a place, no less, where you can BYOB? Because I just got word that my cousin's all-theremin tribute to the Strokes is practicing tonight in Raytown, and you're bringing the beer. And theremins.

But first, stop by the Foundation Room (1221 Union in the West Bottoms), where, starting at 9 p.m. an experimental-music showcase begins, featuring Mark Southerland's Snuff Jazz, one-man-guitar-jam Expo 70, drummer Arnold Young's Young Sextet and the electronic/DJ group Mixed Method are putting on the avant Ritz. Odd, huh? Jazz now has two Foundations in KC.

To getcha in the mood, here's an MP3 from Snuff Jazz's upcoming album, which features "13 men, two women, one crying baby, and nine tracks of pure improv." This cut features Jeff Harshbarger on bass, Kent Burnham on drums and Southerland on the "bastard stritch" -- one of his own creations, no doubt. Hear more from the as-yet-untitled release here.
