Discovery of the Day: Nuthatch 47

Posted by Jason Harper on Fri, May 15, 2009 at 12:52 PM

Don't know about you, but we only just got the memo that there's a local band called Nuthatch 47 that puts lilting, accordion-fueld Russian folk music into a loose, ska-blues headlock and dances around like a drunk Gypsy with it. Kind of like a gentler, more down-home Gogol Bordello.

Looks like even though most of the band members are Missouri boys, they've got a real-live Russian frontman. Killer. Even rubies (or should I say rubles?) sometimes slip through the cracks in this crazy biz and, well .. now we know, damnit!

And now we have plans for Saturday night, too: attending this band's CD-release show at place whose name and equally unknown-to-us status only sweetens the deal (the free admission is nice, too): Bar Swagger at 8431 Wornall Road. Show's at 9 p.m. and promises, according to an e-mail that's been moldering in the inbox all week: "free cake, piñata, smoke machine and music that you WILL relate to."

Hats off to Present for being hip to the band way back in January.

More hilarious video action here.

We played with them at Crosstown Station on May 27th and it was fucking killer. Thanks for giving them the attention they deserve.

Great stuff...three cheers for Babushkin bandita, and oh yeah, thought the guy wearing the Spartak scarf was a nice touch. Will have to check these guys out.
