Want the new Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse album? Well, you're gonna have to break the law to get it. And the artists are all for it. Dark Night of the Soul is a collaboration that features some very significant guest work. The album includes contributions from Suzanne Vega, members of the Pixies, Iggy Pop, the Shins and the Strokes. But thanks to some kind of dispute with EMI, Dark Night of the Soul apparently will have no official release -- not even digitally.

Fortunately, this is the age of the Internet. And the album is out there. You can download it free and illegally, with the artists' blessing, even. Ol' Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse would be much obliged if you'd wait to do the burning on a blank CD-R that they'll send you for $10. At that price, it comes with a poster. You can also throw down $50 for the CD and a book of photography by creepy filmmaker David Lynch.

So, what's the verdict? Does the music live up to the hype? I've listened to the first songs on that NPR stream, and I'm still processing my opinion.
