Riot Fest 2009 announces initial lineup

Chicago's Riot Fest announced the lineup for this year's incarnation, to be held October 7-11. This year, the Fest's fifth, features a cavalcade of bands, including recently reunited acts such as Screeching Weasel, the Murder City Devils and the Dead Milkmen. The usual old-school suspects (Naked Raygun, the Effigies) will probably make an appearance, although the only other confirmed acts at this time are Alkaline Trio, Cock Sparrer, and NOFX.

How many punk festivals do we need, really? Punk has yet to approach the ridiculous levels reached by festivals like Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, or Lollapalooza, but it's getting there. Warped Tour turns fifteen this year. There are, quite literally, children attending the tour who weren't even born when it started.

It seems that now Riot Fest has become an institution as well, and even it's pretty much dwarfed by the No Idea-sponsored The Fest, which has its eighth throwdown in Gainesville this fall. It's even spawned imitators such as last weekend's Windy City Soundclash in Chiacgo and Insurbordination Fest, June 26 and 27 in Baltimore. We've even got our own local version in next week's MidWest Fest.

Plan those trips wisely, kids. There's only so many plane tickets and hotel rooms you can afford, and who knows when another promoter's going to plan one of these.
