More throw in on DJ Jazzy Jeff allegedly getting thrown out of Power & Light

Posted by Jason Harper on Sun, Jun 7, 2009 at 12:06 PM

As my colleague Justin Kendall reported early this morning on the Plog, DJ Jazzy Jeff had his set cut short last night at Power and Light for, I was told by witnesses, "playing hip-hop." I was at the show, but at the moment Jazzy and his MC, Skillz, allegedly got escorted out, I was inside of Raglan freakin' Road, buying a drink. Gah! The crowd was not rowdy at all. It was the most diverse crowd I've seen at P&L, and everyone seemed to be enjoying Jazzy's jams. I don't know what happened. Afterwards, when Jeff and Skills were long gone -- as if to further the buzzkill -- the people responsible for sound began pumping Bob Seger and Bryan Adams through the PA.

Comments to Kendall's post have already blown up, you'll see. Furthermore, Jazzy has continued to tweet, adding,

i guess...Kansas Just don't Understand...lol

about 10 hours ago from web

Local hip-hoppers are outraged, including Miles Bonny, who, in the wee small hours, posted this video blog to his Web site.

And three local heads repping KChiphop.com sent an open letter ThisMayConcernYou.com in which they say,

Hip Hop & Black America will wake up today and laugh at Kansas City. And we -- the young black professionals and the KC hip hop heads -- are hanging our heads, embarrassed by the Power & Light, The Cordish Co. and KC Live.

And, to top it all off, someone has made an entire blog dedicated to this mess. Behold: Kansas City Hip-Hop vs. Power & Light

I'll try to get in touch with a Cordish rep today and get their side of the tale.

I have no idea whether this incident was racially charged or not. But I was there, and there were audio issues with Jazzy Jeffs set.

Did you not hear the HORRIFIC, DEATH SCREACHING, BUZZING and FEEDBACK during Jazzy's short set? He sucked the vibe out of the building with that crap assed mixing. Ive dj'd for over 15 years....you listen to the sound guy no matter what.

Funny I only heard CLEAN SOUND during ZTrips set.....

If Jazzy came to my basement and nearly destroyed MY soundsystem....

I cut his sound too. These are heat of the moment opinions based on what an MC says over the mic and nothing else. The only argument Jazzy can make is he said/ she said.
The argument that Cordish can make is tons of Video and Audio of Ztrips Clean Audio and the Jazzy's CRAP audio. Jazzy Loses on mathematics alone.

To DJ Jazzy Jeff, that was some BULLSHIT the POWER & LIGHT DISTICT officials pulled last night!!! I was told by an employee of the P&L that Hip-Hop music can not be played in the OUTSIDE (the courtyard) area. We want you to know, Kansas City LOVES YOU!!! You are a GREAT DJ! If they'd let you do yo thang, they would have heard your progression. I love how you tie THE MUSIC into 1 another. Diversity is Keen !!! Unfortunately like many other Kansas Citians, we paid for a luxury WE CANT ENJOY!!! That was just one of many slaps in the face to our DIVERSE CULTURE by the POWER & LIGHT DIST.!!! I am VERY ANGERY with the officials over the P&L!!! We can't be silent we must/will do what it takes for EQUALITY!!!

Thanks, it's amazing that you even have to seek out comment from Cordish on the incident. They should be doing some serious damage control. Unless of course they don't have a leg to stand on.
