Free Prince Tribute From Spin

Posted by Nick Spacek on Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 12:00 PM

Spin mentioned this Prince tribute they were doing well over a month ago in celebration of Purple Rain turning 25 this month, and I've been looking forward to it something crazy. This month's copy of the magazine showed up in the mail last Monday, and I immediately flipped to the page with the URL. I went to it, only to discover that the download wouldn't be available until June 23. Thankfully, that's today, and the download went live around 7am.

You have to give Spin your e-mail address, and have a copy of the newest issue (coincidentally, the one with Prince on the cover) so that you know what word to enter into the box. However, when you give up that info, you get the following tracks, all together known as Purplish Rain:

Tracklisting:

1. "Let's Go Crazy" - Riverboat Gamblers

2. "Take Me With U" - Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

3. "The Beautiful Ones" - Fol Chen

4. "Computer Blue" - Of Montreal

5. "Darling Nikki" - Chairlift

6. "When Doves Cry" - The Twilight Singers

7. "I Would Die 4 U" - Mariachi El Bronx

8. "Baby I'm A Star" - Craig Wedren

9. "Purple Rain" - Lavender Diamond

This is going to be the summer hotness. The Twilight Singers have yet to record a single original song that hasn't annoyed the hell out of me, but their covers are peerless. Of Montreal have a collection of covers that will blow your damn mind. The Riverboat Gamblers are a band who were born to record a song called "Let's Go Crazy." And Sharon Jones doing Prince? Yes, please. No need to go any further, but the Bronx as a mariachi band certainly puts this over the top.

Head over to the download page to grab your copy. Of course, as a journalistic entity, it would be irresponsible of us to post the word you have to enter (to say nothing of opening ourselves to lawsuits--Prince is effing litigious), but there's absolutely nothing preventing us from linking to other people who've already leaked it.

The Riverboat Gamblers song could have been way crazier, but the "Oh no, let's go!" parts were stunning and scared the shit out of my cats.

My curiosity about the Twilight Singers track is what sold me on this.

SJ & the DKs cover of Shuggie Otis' "Inspiration Information" for the Day for Night compilation earlier this year was stunning, so I have high hopes for track #2 as well.
