It's official. I can't keep track of all the ironic, figurative and literal upper-lip hair in this city. There's the Kansas City Fake Mustache Club, a bunch of people who go to local rock shows and make podcasts with faux hair affixed to their faces. It's great that this group supports local music, but I confess I remain confused about the point and unamused by the 'staches. There's also Club Mustache -- a rock house around 31st and McGee that, I'm told, is unaffiliated with the KCFMC. Do either of them having anything to do with the van I often see in the River Market with mustaches painted all over it? Will someone please just shave?

Anyway, this weekend, Club Mustache is supposed to be the site of a free show by Red City Radio, an Oklahoma band with awesome song titles like "We Are the Sons of Woody Guthrie." The songs themselves don't really sound like Woody Guthrie, though. The feverish, punky rock is more akin to Gaslight Anthem or Taking Back Sunday, full of hooks and desperation sung by a dude with a voice made of sand. RCR's EP just came out on Eyeball Records and got a nice review from Punknews.org.
