Incoming: American Idol reject Von Smith this Saturday night in Lee's Summit

Posted by Berry Anderson on Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 3:29 PM

This Saturday night, Lee's Summit rasta-throwback bar and grill, Braata (pronounced "braaah-tahhh," brah) will host American Idol contender and YouTube harlot Von Smith.

This information, brought to my attention via e-mail, says the Greenwood native is making a special appearance to promote his upcoming shows at John Knox Pavilion on July 24th and 25th*.

The cheese spreads around 8 p.m. when Von Smith sings a few tunes in between sets from  Lazell Williams on steel drums and the Clint Martinez Trio.

The restaurant is capitalizing on the action by filming a commercial, in which attendees are invited to participate. Braata, by the way, in Jamaican patois, means "a little extra."

(*Neither of these concerts were listed on the John Knox Pavilion website and phone calls to the venue made a 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. were forwarded to voicemail. Perhaps it was dinnertime.)

Cathleen,

Thanks for the comment.

I assure you that any reviews of Braata (including Charles Ferruzza's April 21 review, here http://bit.ly/1yrFS), comments about the NFL's recruiting practices or remarks about Von Smith's career trajectory were completely, 100% uninfluenced by whether or not your restaurant purchased ads in The Pitch. I speak on behalf of all our writers that we are always grateful when local businesses decide to advertise with us, but whether they do or don't, we're still going to call it like we see it when it comes to reviews, etc.

Cathleen, the facts in blog above all came from you when we spoke over the phone and the weekly e-mail bulletin that you and the other managers/owners of Braata sent out.

I believe the problem w/the media is they have trouble getting their facts straight. The commercial was set up before Von Smith made an appearance at Braata. Von is a personal friend of ours and we knew he planned on stopping by but did not know if he would sing or not. Braata knew he the mood was right he would. In actuality, there was much more attention to the commercial shooting by a professional commercial team- Was the Braata family excited for Von to stop by-yes, friends love seeing and being w/friends.

On another note you mentioned-Someone once told me that an NFL football player should never be called a wimp-why? One doesn't make it to the NFL being a wimp. I dare whoever wrote this for the Pitch to try out for the NFL. Another case in point-when 300,000 people try out for Am. Idol and you
make it to the top 17 - You cannot be called a reject. I believe if the Pitch would look up the term of a reject they would see that. It is sad that the Pitch loved us "Braata" when we were advertising w/them. Then when we chose another avenue of marketing-all of a sudden-We received bad reviews-I do believe the Pitch is the only newspaper I know of that plays that game-that is why they will not be around much longer. The Kansas City merchants are much wiser than that. I'm sorry you guys are shooting yourself in the foot.

I dare anyone to hear Von Smith - an even different Von Smith than anyone heard on Am. Idol and not be in awe-He did sing at Braata last Sat. night and mouths dropped open just like they did w/Susan on the Europea version of Idol. Sorry you missed it-He was sensational!!! And will only continue to grow -
