Tonight: Jon Yeager @ Record Bar

Posted by Jason Harper on Tue, Jul 21, 2009 at 9:20 AM

Of course you remember Jon Yeager. Skinny dude, longish hair and beard? Was always out at local shows? Remember or no, the former Daybird turned solo songwriter released an EP and a full-length and did some touring between 2005 and his move to Nashville in August of 2008.

Yeager returns to his old stomping grounds for a show tonight at the Record Bar with guests Cellofourte (a cello quartet, hence the name, that looks quite intriguing) and Color Wheel Squares.

Jon's got a new EP out called Jon Yeager and the Black Magic Mass. The disc's four songs are sonically ambitious, festooned with studio layering and interesting percussive sounds. Yeager produced it himself and played all the instruments, minus the occasional sax. It begins with a blast of Memphis pop soul a la Winwood on "Great Sound" (which we streamed here) and moves into the jaunty indie-pop of "Liza" before getting psychedelic (and a little bit sour) on "Love Is a Heart on Fire." The EP's highest point is definitely the moody closer "Low Yellow Moon," which keeps it real by brushing against "Day in the Life" without going full-on Sgt. Pepper.

MP3:

The show begins at 10, following Rex Hobart's usual Honky Tonk Chuck Wagon Dinner Show; Yeager plays around 11:30. Cover is $7.

My mistake. I set it to post automatically early in the morning ... in the past. Forgot to change the day. It is now appearing at the right moment on the blog-time continuum.
