MP3: White Denim, "Mirrored and Reverse"

I saw White Denim the night before SXSW started at a bar called Ms. Bea's. All they served was cheap beer, and the stage was out back on a sort of porch thing. The KJHK folks I'd gone down with and myself hadn't even checked into our hotel yet, and we were already rocking out to this band, who almost defy description.

White Denim is one of those bands that requires name-checking something like half a dozen other bands to describe, and even then, something gets lots in translation, because their live show sounds completely different from their recorded output. I will endeavor to try and sum up their sound. Please bear with me.

White Denim takes the blues-rock hybrid of the Black Keys, adds in stoner rock sludge a la Black Sabbath with a touch of psychedelic soul and funk from Curtis Mayfield and some crazy-ass Beach Boys harmonies. And even that's a little over-generalized.

Suffice it to say, they're cutting edge hip right now, to the point that their record, Fits, came out Full Time Hobby last week, but only in Europe. It won't be available in the States until October 20. In the meantime, here's a teaser. Hopefully, you can handle the stress of waiting.

Or, you could just say MC5. Which this brother does not mind.
