Wired's 10 Space-Rocking Astronaut Songs

Posted by Nick Spacek on Tue, Aug 4, 2009 at 2:00 PM

Wired put up a list of 10 space-rocking astronaut songs" in honor of the return of the astronauts with the shuttle Endeavour.

Now, while I can totally support their inclusion of the Pixies' "Planet of Sound" and -- of course -- Bowie's "Space Oddity," I cannot brook the fact that they include Billy Thorpe's "Children of the Sun" at the exclusion of Peter Schilling's "Major Tom (Coming Home)." If you're going to include one piece of musical detritus, why not include the one that sucks least?

All these songs seem to explore the negative aspects of space travel, as well. Why not anything by the Phenomenauts or something like the Kicks' "MIR"? That song, with its exuberant lyrics and general desire to get freaky on the moon, would be a definite upgrade from the repeated feelings of loss expressed in the majority of Wired's list.

What would you put on the list of "space-rocking astronaut songs"?

Nothing by Hawkwind? "Space is Deep," "Uncle Sam's on Mars," "Master of the Universe," the entire "Space Ritual" album.
