Everywhere in Kansas City, there are bands who rarely get a chance to play outside of weeknight shows at their local bar and grill. This Labor Day weekend, 120 -- that's ONE HUNDRED 'N TWENTY -- bands from in and around the Kansas City area will play as part of the Kansas City Music Fest. The show runs Friday, September 4 through Sunday, September 6 at the Beaumont Club, and advance passes are $10 for all three days.
The Fest is put on by Gorilla Productions, which might explain why you've never heard of 99% of these bands. They've been hit with accusations of pay-to-play (and coming from a long-established band like Girl Trouble, that's saying something). If you want some eye-raising reading, do a Google search for "Gorilla Productions Scam" and read what pops up. There are lots of unhappy acts out there who are none too thrilled with how some of Gorilla's "battle of the bands" have turned out.

By the way, the lead singer and the guitar player are from Odessa, Missouri which happens to be exit #37 on I-70 thus their name.
3hirty7even is definitely a real band. Check them out at Harley Hot Rods in Blue Springs on October 3rd. You will be surprised, they are really good. A band called Serated and 3hirty7even battled it out last year for the top spot in the Battle of the Bands.
They made a typo. It's actually Orion Falls out of Ottawa, KS. My nephew is lead singer and they have played several battles locally, as have most of the other bands. The reason you may not have heard of them is because they are local and trying to work their way up. Orion Falls plays on Freeradio AM and they have a young hot sound, plus talent to boot! You should really check out the music fest, you might hear something you like! That's how new bands build a fanbase.
Oh c'mon, ya'll have never heard of Brothers Green? the Pitch had them in their 2006 Best of Competetion.....lol
Really though, this article and some others has really raised question about if we should keep this committment. We've sold MANY tickets to a previous function and yes....didn't get paid. This time, they are paying $300 for 100 tickets sold. At $10 a pop that's $700 for them. I was feeling the idea of being able to play in front of some Industry A&R's htat one might have to travel to NY or get lucky to play in front of. But, maybe that isn't worth the effort of hustling up tickets......

@joshua: There was some kind of all-local showcase just last week in Westport, but damned if I can remember who put it on...
@mikemccoy: Right on, brother. We're featuring your fine fest in next week's Pitch.
There are 9 local bands (actual bands) playing at next week's North Versus South Music Festival. Perhaps not "Massive", but definitely authentic: http://www.myspace.com/northvs...
bad news . to bad for the music scene i think kansas city needs a real music festival done by real musicians or music people such as robert moore or any of the well respected people in our city of great musicians
3hirty 7even and Caucasian Debris seem to be real bands, 3hirty 7even even has this flyer as their current profile pic on myspace.
Left On Northwood actually lives over by me, and they and Moire have played real, honest-to-God shows before. That's more surprising than any of the unknowns.
These look like band names you get in a band name generator:
Lies of Atrophy
Onion Falls
3hirty 7even
Caucasian Debris
Actually, are any of these bands real?
