As many of you have already read, sui generis local musician Scott Hobart (Giants Chair, Rex Hobart & the Misery Boys) is plying his ax to the work of Edgar Allen Poe over at the Coterie Theatre even as we utter his cursed, stricken name. Oh!
Now, the Coterie may be aimed at the kids, but anyone interested in the art of guitar should be curious as to how exactly Hobart will provide a convincing six-string soundtrack to a single actor's Poe monologues.
I have to admit, when I first learned of this, I pictured the two dudes in Victorian garb trading mimicking riffs like Jimmy Page and Robert Plant in "Dazed and Confused" (Nevermore! the actor would shriek, and then Hobart would fire back with the wah pedal.) But of course I knew in my heart that whatever Hobart did end up doing, it would be tasteful and quite likely compelling -- more like Neil Young's solo guitar score for the Jim Jarmusch film Dead Man.

Tell-Tale Electric Poe opened this past Tuesday and runs through October 2 at the Coterie, with showings today at 10 a.m., noon and 7 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.. For details and tickets, CoterieTheatre.org.
