Earlier this month, Seattle independent radio station KEXP presented their list of the best cover songs ever.

The top ten were, as follows:

10. Nirvana, "The Man Who Sold the World" (David Bowie)

9. Gary Jules, "Mad World" (Tears for Fears)

8. Cowboy Junkies, "Sweet Jane" (Lou Reed)

7. Devo, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (Rolling Stones)

6. Iron & Wine, "Such Great Heights" (Postal Service)

5. Dinosaur Jr, "Just Like Heaven" (The Cure)

4. Cloud Cult, "Mr. Tambourine Man" (Bob Dylan)

3. Jimi Hendrix, "All Along the Watchtower" (Bob Dylan)

2. Johnny Cash, "Hurt" (Nine Inch Nails)

1. Jeff Buckley, "Hallelujah" (Leonard Cohen)

The list also includes William Shatner's "Common People" cover, as well as Pearl Jam's version of the Victoria Williams classic, "Crazy Mary." There's a lot of indie covers on the list -- unsurprising, given the leanings of KEXP and their listeners -- but it's still way better than the list AOL Radio did back in July.

The fact that neither list included the Circle Jerks' "Golden Shower of Hits" is a fucking travesty, however.

I'm hard pressed to find a song on this list that isn't actually worse than the original. Also, any use of "Hallelujah" in a tv show, commercial or movie is analogous to the use of cute, starving children to solicit donations.

Elton John's cover of Pinball Wizard is one of the best covers ever!
