Friday Freebies

Posted by on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 3:00 PM

And once again, we bring you Friday Freebies, wherein we present things to do this weekend that won't cost you any more than the gas it takes to get to 'em.

If you want to get some art in this weekend, there are two shows where not only can you get an eyeful of many artists' work, you'll be able to buy it. Buying original art as a present for the coming holidays serves two purposes. First, you'll be giving the recipient something original and second, you'll be supporting a local artist.

First show this weekend is from 4-8 p.m. tonight at the Reardon Civic Center at 400 Minnesota. The Kaw Valley Arts Council presents their Holiday Art Sale, which benefits the United Way of Wyandotte County. Original art, and the proceeds go to a good cause. I think that if you might find your way down there this evening, spending money (even in this economy) might be a bit of a good deed.

The second show comes tomorrow night at Wonder Fair: Art Gallery and How! in Lawrence. From 6-9 p.m. will be the opening reception for "I Think We Are Making Progress," wherein nearly 30 artists will offer up their wares for sale. As an added bonus, everything is $125 or less, meaning you could possibly get some swank art from Lawrence's more name artists on the cheap. In addition, Far Out! Catering will supply beverages to slake your thirst while you listen to the musical stylings of Fortuning, ET&T and Bear Bar BBQ Club.
