What Are You Thankful For (That Someone Else Is Doing)?

Posted by Jason Harper on Wed, Nov 25, 2009 at 3:49 PM

OK, this is gonna seem really cheesy, but here's the deal. The Wayward Blog is probably not gonna see much activity over the next few days. Some of us are a-travelin'; others are working harder at their day jobs to accommodate coworkers who are a-travelin'. Our poor little watchdog of the scene will go malnourished -- unless you help us scratch up some bones.

So, in the spirit of the season, tell us in the comments what you're thankful for in regards to the local music scene. We wanna hear about the awesome, positive stuff that has you excited. It can be a band, a song, a venue, a person, an idea ... anything that you want your fellow townfolk to know about. And save the snark for your aardvark.

The one catch is that it can't be something you're involved in. No self-promo here -- lifting up of your fellow brothers and sisters in music only. Feel free to include links, concert info, whatever pertains to the real-world-correlative of your show of gratitude. Or just share some random thoughts.

And if you decide to tweet your thanks, add the hashtag #thxkcmusic. Here's your shortening: http://bit.ly/7A4yRu

Why not?

Have a happy Thanksgiving.

Feel the love.

KKFI.
Chuck Haddix and the Fish Fry.
Greg Enemy's "Fly Ass Glasses".
Bent Left and Fists Up! for making pop-punk.
KTP for never ceasing to be friendly.
Love Garden, even though they probably get 50% of the proceeds from my ramblings here.

I'm thankful to the Pitch, quite frankly, for recognizing the talent and contribution of one of my childhood friends, Stik Figa, and honoring him with a Pitch Award this year.

I'm thankful to all my old Kansas City musician friends that are still expressing themselves. Kenn J., Ryan S., Ben G., Jarm J.G., The Hoskins, Dan E., Jake R., Chet K., and, of course, a ton of others that have inspired and continue to inspire me.

I'm thankful to the new school, Greg and Dutch especially.

I'm also thankful for the positive feedback (I hope that's not too much self-promotion).

I'm thankful that every night of the week if I can get my geezer ass up and out there is live music to see or a place to play.

Talent in this town and establishments, which my son from the East Coast never fails to tell me,are as good as any city in the country.

For people like Abby, Bob, Jeff, Norm, Buzzz, Chris, Billy and all the others who have tolerated an F.O.G. Actually they and many others have guided and pushed me to new limits.

As Dave Van Ronk used to say, Listen to that song, you people. Listen to that god-damn song!!!!

The talent in this town!..Thankful for every single one of them..every voice, vision, bad ass amp grinding noise making chord banging song that gets sent up in the world. Thankful for the ones who let them play, and the ones who push them harder to do better....thankful for the quiet ones, the loud ones, the risk takers, the old favorites, te ones who spin the records, the ones who run the boards, the bars....all of you...every single one of you. And especially thankful for the ones who stand right up there in the front, past the lights, right by the guitar rig, falling in love with the song like no one is watching...XOXO You beautiful fuckers! You amaze me..

I'm thankful for the growth of downtown nightlife. There's still a lot of work to do, but it's nice to catch multiple gigs in one night without going south of 20th street. I'm talking specifically about Crosstown and the Czar Bar -- between those new joints and the Brick, we got us a mini-fest every weekend, feels like.

But I live down here. I'm always thankful for Davey's, the Riot, Record Bar, Dave's and it's new smoking deck and 3 a.m. license. I have yet to hit Gusto but am hoping to soon.

There's been a lot of growth, and I'm thankful for that.

There.

Plastic Sax! Thoughtful analysis of the local jazz scene and lots of updates about local music and musicians. I wish there were more people in KC doing stuff like this.
