Video: The Funk & Reggae Dance Summit

Posted by Jason Harper on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 10:03 AM

This Friday, December 18, the reggae band SeedLove, the funk band Mouth and the emcee known as Reach are hosting the Funk & Reggae Dance Summit at the Beaumont, and they've made this video to tell you about it.

Don't be deterred by the guy in the tie-dyed shirt hot-steppin' at 0:32, nor by the Thriftway production values. It's pretty interesting to watch. Though, come to think of it, this would be way more interesting had they actually filmed inside of a Thriftway...

Anyway, you've already had an audio sample of Reach with Mouth; this gives you some visuals. It also shows some footage of Mouth mouthin' off with Val Baul in studio at KKFI.

Damon Bailey of SeedLove on Mouth: "Everything you want of the dance bands that come through and everything you wish the jazz bands had, they've got it. They can express themselves and impress everybody at the same time. It's a joy."

That's good, right?

See? Try to be nice to a hippie and look where it gets you.

@Jason Harper

You're okay, I guess.

But your article is kind of a deterrent to me thinking better of you.

@Reach: "Be there and be happy about it later."

Well said!

If our band practices are ANY indication of what Friday night will be... You'll hate yourself for missing out. So don't. Be there and be happy about it later.

Hi. Thanks for calling me a deterrent. I find guys taking up dance floor space with cameras to be a much larger deterrent. If you're going to film a show, set up some cameras beforehand, otherwise do it at a larger venue. Bust a move or sit down, your camera blocks my view. Thanks.

This shoddy video doesn't do justice to the awesome power that Mouth has on stage. The man who has written this short expose has no real understanding of the essence of pure funkiness that is Mouth.

Mouth brings an avalanche of dance-funk-jazz-rhythm-awesomeness that pulls people out of their chairs and onto the dance floor. No one can resist their fantastic vibes. This band is certainly capable of receiving world-class attention.

Seedlove brings the love of music, the beautiful reggae style and vocals, and good chemistry to the stage for all their listeners. Their cheerful attitude and playful musicianship bring a wonderful atmosphere to wherever they play, and that's hard to replicate.

Both these groups are phenomenal. Just go see them play and you'll know it immediately. Don't forget your dancin' shoes.

See you on the dance floor.

Hey Jason, thanks for the post. Thriftway was booked up that night so we had to settle for the Jazzhaus.

Actually the editing is bad because I did it, in one 12-hour marathon editing session, having never edited a video with Adobe Premiere before (or any other program, for that matter). All things considered I'm pretty happy with how it came out, but next time I'll leave it to someone who knows what they're doing.

We (Mouth, Damon and Reach) will be on Vibes with Val again tomorrow night (10 p.m. on 90.1 KKFI), talking about the Funk & Reggae Dance Summit and playing some live recordings of the Mouth/SeedLove/Reach collaborations.
