It's time for Easter, people. And that means a whole host of new chocolate candies. At the forefront is Peeps' chocolate-covered marshmallows, a departure from the exclusively marshmallow cutouts made by Just Born.
I'll admit that I was hesitant to open the plastic packaging because of the chick-shaped chocolate blob on the front. Featureless chocolate figures tend to be amorphous in taste as well.
A Wichita jury found confessed killer Scott Roeder guilty of first-degree murder for killing Wichita abortion provider George Tiller.
The jury also found Roeder guilty of two counts of aggravated assault against two witnesses.
The state will be seeking a "hard 50" sentence.
Jurors deliberated for less than an hour Friday morning.
On Thursday, Roeder testified that he killed Tiller at a church service last May.
Attorneys for Tiller's family issued the following statement on behalf of Tiller's wife, Jeanne Tiller, and family:
"The family of Dr. George Tiller would like to thank the jury, District Attorney Nola Foulston and her office and law enforcement for their service in this difficult matter. Once again, a Sedgwick County jury has reached a just verdict. We also want to thank George's countless friends and supporters in Wichita and around the country who have offered their comfort.
At this time we hope that George can be remembered for his legacy of service to women, the help he provided for those who needed it and the love and happiness he provided us as a husband, father and grandfather."
From listening to Afentra's Big Fat Morning Buzz on KRBZ 96.5 this morning, I gather that the morning jocks recently spoke on-air with Eula Inloes, president of the Here's Waldo Neighborhood Association. Inloes, whom Afentra said is in her 90s, offered safety tips for her neighbors now that the Waldo Rapist is on the prowl.
Afentra said this morning that in her earlier talk with Inloes, the senior citizen mentioned how much she'd love to own a police scanner. Afentra took to Twitter to find a scanner for Inloes, and a listener donated one to the station. The radio personalities left a message on Inloes' machine this morning, telling her that they'd be stopping by with said police scanner on Monday morning. It's like Christmas in February!
Pitch readers may recall that Inloes played a prominent role in the debate over the Sunnyside dog park. That idea was proposed -- grass-roots-style -- approved by the Dog Park Task Force, but then shot down like Old Yeller after opponents such as Inloes (whose BFF is Parks Board Commissioner Aggie Stackhaus) poo-pooed the idea of dirty doggies playing freely at Sunnyside.
A police scanner, one imagines, may swell Inloes' cranky powers to superhero proportions. Perhaps the Buzz should also give her a costume so she can play sidekick to Alonzo Washington's crime-fighting, Blade-wannabe comic-book character.
The jury didn't take long to reach a verdict in the trial of confessed killer Scott Roeder. Closing arguments ended less than an hour ago.

Whole Foods CEO John Mackey is seeking to use a carrot, not Kit Kat stick, to motivate his employees to get in better shape.
In a recent letter, Mackey explained that employees with healthier biometrics (cholesterol, blood pressure and body mass index levels) would qualify for a higher employee discount than the standard 20 percent. An employee who met the proposed new standards and participated in regular screenings would qualify for up to a 30 percent discount.
Judge Warren Wilbert ruled yesterday that the jury cannot consider voluntary manslaughter in the first-degree murder trial of Scott Roeder, who testified that he killed Wichita abortion provider George Tiller.
The Wichita Eagle reports that Wilbert also ruled that the jury cannot consider a lesser charge of second-degree murder.
Jurors will begin deliberating this morning.

Jim Mahfood is well-known around these parts. He went to the Kansas City Art Institute, and during his time there, he started his Grrl Scouts comics (then known as Girl Scouts), as well as doing some time with Flavorpak and the paper whence comes this blog.
A brief aside: Mafood did the cover for the "Best In Music" issue one year ('97 or '98), and it hung on the wall of three different dorm rooms, and then died a terrible death from a water spill. Seriously, it's one of my favorite illustration pieces ever.
Mahfood's early comics were notable for the fact that each one featured recommended listening, and musical details stuck in here and there. The Generation X Underground Special has Jubilee rocking Fishbone, for instance. There are so many damn good musicians this man has turned me onto, I can't even begin to count.
