Incoming: The Bronx at the Riot Room, March 22

When the loud-as-hell hardcore rock 'n' roll of the Bronx hits the Riot Room on Monday, March 22, their noise is going to be tempered somewhat. The band will play two sets: one as the bellowing rock monster with which you're familiar, and another as Mariachi El Bronx, which is exactly what it sounds like.

The Bronx's mariachi record, released last year, isn't a hardcore take on mariachi music or any other such genre convergence. Mariachi El Bronx is simply a bunch of hardcore musicians playing traditional mariachi music. Granted, they've songs like "Cell Mates" and "Slave Labor," which seem more appropriate titles for narcocorridos than mariachi tunes. However, while the lyrics might be something more than your usual mariachi fare, the album is remarkably faithful to the mariachi tradition.

Also on the bill is Japanther, who you might recall as the opener on last year's Dillinger Four show at the Granada.
